The altcoin market capitalization reached $1.07 trillion, representing a key long-term level that traders are closely monitoring for potential breakout. According to reports from AMBCrypto, this level has been acting as resistance since May and could potentially do so again. The current testing of this mid-range level comes after altcoins achieved an all-time high of $1.77 trillion on October 7, 2025, which was only slightly above the previous peak of $1.71 trillion recorded on November 8, 2021.
Despite recent market weakness, institutional investors continue showing interest in major altcoins. Bitmine added 28,086 ETH, bringing its treasury to nearly 4.9% of Ethereum's supply, while Spot ETH ETFs recorded $218 million in inflows in the past week. Similarly, DeFi Development Corp. raised $11 million to buy SOL, adding potential institutional demand. However, this institutional interest hasn't translated into immediate price gains, as Ethereum fell about 2% and Solana dropped 4% despite these positive developments.
Crypto analyst Arab Chain highlighted concerning trends in altcoin exchange activity, noting that the number of addresses associated with altcoin inflows to exchanges has been rising to reach the highest level since May. As reported by AMBCrypto, Binance alone saw 25,856 addresses among the exchanges measured, signaling increased movement of altcoins to exchanges. However, the analyst cautioned that this doesn't necessarily indicate an immediate sell-off, as it could also be linked to trader activity or increased liquidity. Recent data from CryptoQuant shows 160.06 billion SHIB tokens left exchanges over the past 24 hours, with exchanges holding approximately 87.25 trillion tokens - around 14.8% of the cryptocurrency's total supply.
The altcoin market showed divergent performance during recent trading sessions. Tron gained 2.7% following Canary Capital's launch of TRXS, the first spot-staked TRON ETF, while Aptos surged 6.4% driven by Bitwise filing an S-1 for a potential spot APT ETF. Kaspa was the strongest performer, surging 23% as its circulating supply approached 96.5% of its hard cap. However, Ripple's XRP faced a sharper decline despite RLUSD's market cap surpassing $2.3 billion, and Binance Chain fell 1.5% even as it strengthened its position in tokenized assets with $1.267 billion in tokenized stocks - 44.6% of the market.
The altcoin season index currently sits at 40, indicating the market is still leaning toward Bitcoin season rather than altcoin season. Bitcoin dominance stands at 59.29%, up 0.18%, showing that Bitcoin continues to command a strong share of the overall crypto market. However, with Bitcoin dominance testing the key 60% resistance level, weak trading volumes and renewed macro uncertainty could trigger another rejection, potentially paving the way for a September-like altcoin rally. A breakout past the mid-range level of $1.07 trillion would be a positive development for the altcoin market, though on-chain metrics suggest such a breakout could be challenging to achieve given the current institutional preference for Bitcoin.
