The financial industry is witnessing a significant shift as Anthropic unveiled new agents for finance, Circle launched nanopayments, MoonPay launched a debit card for agents and Gemini launched agentic trading, according to reports from CoinDesk. While these products represent new offerings, the underlying business model remains fundamentally unchanged. The conflict centers on brokerages and exchanges earning more when customers trade more, with data showing unambiguous impacts on customer portfolios. The agentic rails have arrived faster than incentive structures have changed, creating a structural challenge to the industry.
The industry conflict is structural to the industry, with brokerages and exchanges needing customers to trade, not win, as reported by CoinDesk. In 2025, U.S. market makers paid more than $4.9 billion for order flow in U.S. equity and options, up from approximately $3.8 billion in 2021 across the 12 largest U.S. brokerages. The same principle applies to crypto, with derivatives volume from Q1 of 2026 reaching about $18.6 trillion, representing 70% of global crypto trading. At peak, Robinhood relied on more than 75 percent of its revenue from payment for order flow (PFOF). PiP World research found 74% to 89% of retail users lose money trading, with platforms charging at every step regardless of customer profit and loss.
The disruptor to this cycle is the agent built to trade less, size down, wait and protect customers from their worst impulses, according to CoinDesk reports. These agents earn only when customer portfolios rise, breaking the current incentive model where exchanges profit from trading velocity over disciplined decision-making. Programmable incentives encoded into smart contracts tie agent incentives to portfolio gains, allowing customers to see where money goes and verify agent payments. The agent rewards disciplined trading rather than constant trading, cutting exposure when risk rises and sitting out during market noise.
The EU's PFOF ban takes effect June 30, 2026, removing revenue lines behind free trades for German and Austrian neobrokers, as reported by CoinDesk. Trade Republic, a European savings platform, has already found another route to secure a BaFin license to internalize order flow. In crypto markets, agents transact via nanopayment infrastructure like Circle's protocol, with gas-free trading on perpetual DEX Hyperliquid cutting friction. The real fight ahead isn't removing friction but determining who profits when agents start using these frictionless rails with high-frequency trading.
