GAIL (India) Limited just dropped its Q2 FY27 numbers, and on paper, they look spectacular. Consolidated net profit surged 139.3% year-on-year to Rs 4,720 crore, while revenue climbed 32.7% to Rs 47,301 crore. The board also approved listing its subsidiary, GAIL Gas Limited, through an IPO involving up to 25% equity dilution. Other
In Q2 FY26, consolidated profit after tax (PAT) had fallen to Rs 1,972 crore from Rs 2,369 crore in Q1 FY26. Management described FY26 as a poor year for gas transmission, citing delayed refinery pipeline connectivity, a fertilizer plant shutdown, weak power demand, an early and heavy monsoon, and floods that disrupted pipelines at four places. Higher spot LNG (liquefied natural gas) prices in Q2 FY26 also pushed refineries and industries to switch to alternative fuels, hurting domestic consumption.
Sequentially, the profit picture is much flatter. Consolidated PAT was Rs 4,665 crore in Q1 FY27 and Rs 4,720 crore in Q2 FY27. That's only about 1% higher quarter on quarter. The real step-up happened in Q1 FY27, when EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) jumped to Rs 7,573 crore from Rs 2,703 crore in Q4 FY26. Transcript
Natural gas transmission volumes did not fall in H1 FY27. Gas marketing volumes did. The two are often mixed up, so it's worth keeping them separate. H1 FY27 transmission averaged 126 MMSCMD (million standard cubic metres per day), compared with 122 in FY26. Q1 FY27 transmission volume was 122.36 MMSCMD, up from 118.99 in Q4 FY26, driven by about 4 MMSCMD of extra shipper volume. Investor Presentation +1
Gas marketing, however, told a different story. Q1 FY27 marketing volume was 93.82 MMSCMD, including 8.76 MMSCMD of international sales. That's down from 101.88 MMSCMD in Q4 FY26. H1 FY27 marketing averaged 96 MMSCMD, compared with 104 in FY26. The decline was driven by Qatar's force majeure, which cut volumes, and the West Asia/Hormuz disruption. GAIL bought 8 spot cargoes in Q1 to fill the gap. Overseas sales fell from 14.32 MMSCMD in Q4 FY26 to 8.76 in Q1 FY27. Transcript +4
Sector demand in Q1 FY27 versus Q4 FY26 showed mixed trends: city gas distribution (CGD) rose to 33.59 MMSCMD from 30.22, fertilizers fell to 30.01 from 32.92, power increased to 9.68 from 8.57, and "others" dropped to 11.78 from 15.85. Domestic gas consumption fell about 5% year-on-year in the March 2026 quarter, per Ambit Capital, adding to the demand backdrop. Investor Presentation +1
Despite lower marketing volumes, consolidated revenue rose. Q2 revenue was Rs 47,301 crore, against Rs 41,350 crore in Q1 and Rs 35,705 crore in Q4 FY26. With marketing volumes below last year, the rise looks price-led, though that's an inference rather than a management statement.
The profit mix shifted toward other segments. Transmission and liquid hydrocarbons (LHC) carried Q1 earnings, while marketing and polymer volumes were hit. LHC production rose about 20% to 232 TMT (thousand metric tonnes). Segment profit before tax (PBT) was Rs 772 crore, against Rs 144 crore in Q4 FY26, helped by higher LPG prices. Transmission held up on higher shipper volumes and the new Mumbai–Nagpur–Jharsuguda pipeline, which began operating on 31 May 2026. Transcript +1
Polymer was the weak spot. The segment lost Rs 130 crore in Q1 as gas feedstock was diverted to priority sectors. Polymer production fell to 51 TMT from 153 TMT in Q4. Gas marketing spreads improved because Henry Hub and JCC-linked (Japan Crude Cocktail) sourcing was not matched by indexed sales. Management called this benefit short-term and kept FY27 gas marketing PBT guidance at about Rs 4,500 crore, to be reviewed later. Transcript +1
The board approved listing wholly owned subsidiary GAIL Gas Limited through an IPO, diluting GAIL's stake by up to 25%. GAIL Gas must now submit a proposal based on its lead managers' recommendations on valuation, price band and modality. The GAIL board then approves the final dilution and terms. Other
The filing states no rationale beyond the dilution itself. Media commentary points to value unlocking: a separate listing lets the market value the CGD business on its own, not blended with GAIL's transmission and petrochemicals. The IPO is also linked to the government's Asset Monetisation Pipeline 2.0, under which state-owned firms divest subsidiary stakes between FY27 and FY30. Other
In August 2026, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) approved moving six CGD areas into GAIL Gas: Varanasi, Patna, Ranchi, Cuttack, East Singhbhum and Khordha. ET reports the transfer will complete by 1 January 2027. This consolidates GAIL's retail gas assets into one entity for the first time and is described as strengthening GAIL Gas's balance sheet before the offer.
The use of proceeds is not disclosed. The DRHP will state it. GAIL's disclosed FY27 capital expenditure plan is about Rs 11,500 crore. Whether any proceeds fund that is not stated. The split between offer for sale (OFS) and fresh issue is also undisclosed. An OFS brings cash to GAIL and dilutes its stake to at least 75%, while a fresh issue funds GAIL Gas's growth without cash reaching the parent. Other
Valuation is not yet determined. Reports cite a target offer size of around Rs 3,000–3,100 crore, media-reported and subject to change. If the entire amount were a 25% OFS, GAIL Gas would be valued at about Rs 12,000–12,400 crore—roughly 11% of GAIL's current market cap of Rs 1,08,601 crore. That's illustrative arithmetic, not an estimate, and assumes the reported size matches the 25% dilution and that the offer is all OFS. Neither is confirmed. Other
The market hasn't priced in GAIL's Q2 results yet. The numbers were reported at about 3:51 PM IST, after the 3:30 PM close. Today's session therefore trades on the pre-result position. GAIL's stock gained 1.86% to Rs 168.25 on 30 October, but that move happened before the results were known, so it can't be called an "earnings beat" rally. The first real reaction will be on the next trading session.
Reliance Industries fell 0.72% today to Rs 1,159. It was down 3.19% on 28 October and hit a 52-week low of Rs 1,160.40 on 9 October, down about 25.6% year to date by then. The drivers are company-specific: the Jio Platforms listing on 28 October, concerns about oil and gas profitability from the West Asia crisis, higher depreciation from heavy capital expenditure, and a broad market correction of about 15% in 2026. Reliance also reports Q2 results today, but those numbers aren't available yet, so there's no direct read-across to GAIL.
Gujarat Gas data was not returned. GAIL's integrated model—transmission, marketing and liquid hydrocarbons—gives it a different earnings profile compared to pure-play CGD companies.
Analysts think this is just the beginning, but the sustainability of sentiment will depend on Q2 management commentary, which isn't available yet. The earnings call was scheduled for 4:30 PM today, and no transcript is indexed. Key questions include whether gas marketing volumes recover, how long the favorable spreads last, and what guidance management gives for FY27 transmission and marketing profit.
The GAIL Gas IPO adds another layer. A successful listing could unlock value and provide a separate platform for investors to participate in the city gas distribution business. But the valuation, offer structure and use of proceeds will be critical. Until the DRHP is filed, much remains uncertain.
GAIL's Q2 FY27 performance is strong, but it's not as straightforward as the headline numbers suggest. The profit surge is partly a bounce back from a weak base, volumes are mixed, and the short-term spread benefit may not last. The GAIL Gas IPO is a strategic move that could reshape the company's structure, but the details are still emerging. For now, the story is one of resilience amid volatility, with the promise of more clarity to come.
