According to reports from Mint, Balaji Telefilms has entered into a strategic partnership with YouTube to launch five original shows spanning 200 episodes. This partnership represents a clear shift in content distribution strategy, with entertainment industry experts noting that producers are increasingly choosing video platforms over subscription-based streaming services. The collaboration allows Balaji to retain intellectual property ownership while generating revenue through advertising, sponsorships, and brand partnerships without surrendering rights under traditional licensing deals.
As reported by Mint, YouTube offers significant advantages through its massive connected-TV reach of over 75 million adults in India alone. Gunjan Soni, managing director - India at YouTube, emphasized that partners like Balaji Telefilms can retain IP ownership while tapping into this substantial audience base and unlocking new monetization pathways. The platform's discovery tools and burgeoning connected-TV audience are drawing both studios and independent creators, particularly where there is existing fan base, regional appeal, and robust potential for sharing.
According to Mint reports, Samay Raina's India's Got Latent Season 2 premiere demonstrates the platform's potential, crossing 45 million public YouTube views within four days, while Netflix's official Top 10 data reported only 2.2 million views. Industry experts note that for the right IP, YouTube can materially expand viewership by removing subscription barriers and adding discovery through recommendations, search, sharing and short-form extensions. The gap in viewership numbers shows how much wider consumption can be when content is available freely without subscription requirements.
As reported by Mint, the trend reflects producers' preference for ownership, flexibility and audience reach over exclusivity. Creator-led and producer-owned properties are increasingly adopting hybrid YouTube + OTT models rather than defaulting to exclusivity. Saurabh Srivastava, chief operating officer of digital business at Shemaroo Entertainment, noted that connected TV growth is making YouTube a mainstream entertainment destination, with more premium IPs moving to YouTube to unlock larger audiences and extend monetization lifecycles.
According to Mint reports, the biggest opportunity lies with IP that already has an audience but has not reached full commercial potential behind subscription walls. Arjit Sachdeva from VDO.AI identified long-running television-originated content and established libraries as obvious categories, along with comedy, stand-up and unscripted formats that naturally benefit from open ecosystems. Regional audiences in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and other languages represent enormous demand pools, with YouTube already having deep behavioral familiarity with these viewers.
