According to reports from Moneycontrol, Wockhardt expects to launch its breakthrough antibiotic Zaynich in the US by around first quarter 2027, while securing European approval by December 2026-January 2027. Founder Chairman Habil Khorakiwala announced these timelines at the launch of the Wockhardt Antibiotic Academy, outlining the next phase of the company's global commercialisation strategy for the drug.
As reported by Moneycontrol, the company has already put in place a senior management team in the US and recruited 35-40 medical doctors globally with infectious disease expertise to prepare the market ahead of launch. Wockhardt is currently undertaking a four-to-six-month pre-launch programme focused on scientific engagement with hospitals and clinicians in both India and the US. According to Khorakiwala, Zaynich will be primarily driven by the knowledge and scientific aspect of the new drug, with the company building awareness among doctors on when and how the antibiotic should be used.
According to Moneycontrol, Wockhardt has already filed for approval and remains in active discussions with regulators in Europe. The company expects a decision within the next four to five months. Once approved, the European dossier will serve as the basis for registrations in several other international markets. A key advantage of the European approval process is that Zaynich is expected to receive a broad label covering multiple serious infections, including complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI), hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia, bloodstream infections and intra-abdominal infections.
As reported by Moneycontrol, Khorakiwala positioned Zaynich as part of Wockhardt's larger ambition to build global leadership in anti-infectives. He stated that the company is probably the most successful antibiotic drug discovery organisation in the world today, noting that the company has invested about ₹6,400 crore ($800 million) over 25 years in discovering new antibiotics. The antibiotic is one of five novel anti-infective drugs developed by Wockhardt that have successfully completed Phase III clinical trials.
According to Moneycontrol, Zaynich (WCK 5222) received US FDA approval on May 30, 2026 for the treatment of complicated urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis, becoming the first drug discovered and developed in India to win USFDA approval. The drug was also approved in India in May 2026 and is currently under review by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The antibiotic demonstrated about 20 percent superiority over meropenem, the current gold-standard therapy, in clinical studies.
