Tata Elxsi shares plunged nearly 6% to hit a 5-year low following the Q1FY27 results announcement, as reported by The Financial Express. The stock witnessed heavy selling pressure as investors reacted to weaker profitability despite revenue growth in the June quarter. This represents a continuation of the stock's underperformance, having lost 13% in the past month, 22% in three months, 36% in six months and 45% over the past year, significantly underperforming the NIFTY 50's 8% decline. The current bearish sentiment reflects investor concerns over five key factors: sharp margin miss despite revenue beat, continued weakness in transportation business, lower spending by European automotive customers, impact of large deals on profitability, and target price cuts by brokerages. The stock has declined 45% from its 52-week high of ₹6,423.10 reached in July 2025, making it one of the worst performers in the IT sector.
Tata Elxsi Ltd. has reported its Q1FY27 results, with the company's consolidated net profit rising 18.2% year-over-year to ₹170.6 crore from ₹144.37 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. However, revenue from operations showed strong year-over-year growth of 14.5% to ₹1,021.1 crore from ₹892.10 crore in Q1FY26, with revenue growing 2.8% sequentially and 1.3% in constant currency terms, meeting street expectations. The EBITDA grew 15.7% YoY to ₹216 crore while EBITDA margin stood at 21.2%, indicating better operational efficiency despite sequential margin pressures. Profit Before Tax (PBT) stood at ₹232.5 crore, growing 18.4% YoY with PBT margin at 21.9%, while PAT margin was at 16.1%. However, EBIT margin contracted to 19%, missing estimates of 21.5%, as highlighted by Choice Institutional Equities. Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) fell 12.4% sequentially to ₹193.8 crore from ₹221.3 crore, with EBIT margin declining to 19% from 22.3%, while net profit dropped 22.6% quarter-on-quarter to ₹171 crore from ₹220 crore. The EBIT margin contracted 340 basis points quarter-on-quarter to 21.2%, missing the Street estimate of 22%, as reported by CNBC TV18. Tata Elxsi delivered a mixed Q1 FY27 performance with revenue growing by 1.3% QoQ CC, while Ebit margin declined sharply by 330 bps QoQ to 19.0%, below brokerage estimates, as noted by NDTV Profit.
The company faced significant regional headwinds during the quarter, with revenue from Europe declining 1.9% sequentially as automotive original equipment manufacturers continued to reduce engineering expenditure. However, management expects a turnaround in Europe, as noted by ICICI Securities. Media vertical led growth during the quarter, with strong traction in US and APAC geography and momentum in aerospace and off-road segment. Revenue growth was driven by the ramp-up of earlier wins in M&C vertical, which grew +2.9% QoQ CC vs +5.6% QoQ CC in Q4 FY26, as reported by NDTV Profit. Transportation continued to show weak performance, attributed to European auto market (Germany) due to slower decision-making and weaker OEM spending. The management expects transportation growth to be supported by Americas and APAC regions on the back strategic large wins, which is expected to see ramps in the coming quarters. Motilal Oswal noted that revenue growth largely came from the Media & Communications segment, while the Transportation and Healthcare businesses remained weak, which is particularly concerning given that transportation contributes nearly 55% of Tata Elxsi's overall revenue. Management maintains its positive outlook on automotive demand (ex-Europe), with the top customer remaining steady, in line with its Q4FY26 commentary. Large deals weighed on profitability due to delivery mix, higher investments and a wage hike, as noted by JP Morgan.
PL Capital has downgraded Tata Elxsi to 'Reduce' from earlier 'Hold' considering the growth uncertainty and incremental margin pressure, as reported by NDTV Profit. The brokerage has revised its target multiple to 23 times FY28E EPS (24x earlier), translating to a revised target price of ₹3,350. According to PL Capital, margins contracted despite a 50 bps tailwind from currency benefit, impacted majorly by one off item related to transaction costs and employee retention costs, and investments in people and capabilities. The brokerage noted that large deal ramps require higher upfront investments through increased onsite presence, elevated subcon costs and transition expenses, which impacted margins by ~150 bps QoQ in Q1 and are expected to recover by Q4 FY27. Margins were further impacted by 220–230 bps QoQ owing to structural investments in onsite sales and delivery personnel, AI infra and tools, higher provisioning related to a client bankruptcy, and elevated visarelated costs, which should recoup gradually over medium to long-term. ICICI Securities has reduced its FY27E/FY28E Ebit margin estimates by 130 bps/110 bps to 20.0%/21.3% respectively, factoring in the weak margin performance and continued investments. The brokerage largely maintains its FY27E revenue growth estimate at 6.0% CC but lower our FY28E growth estimate to 8.8% CC (from 10.0%), reflecting slower recovery in the European auto market.
During the quarter, Tata Elxsi launched ViTEL, a GenAI-powered material intelligence platform, and AnaTEL, an AI-native software development platform for the medtech and healthcare industry, as reported by LiveMint. The company said it remains well positioned to address customers' strategic priorities across its focus verticals, including connected, intelligent and software-defined products, digital transformation, AI-led efficiencies, customer experience and engineering modernisation. Choice Institutional Equities noted that Tata Elxsi is accelerating investments in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, platforms and talent to strengthen its domain-plus-AI offerings, though these investments are expected to keep margins under pressure in the near term. The company added that it remains focused on delivering sustainable growth by strengthening relationships with key customers, pursuing long-term strategic deals, adding marquee clients and maintaining its industry-leading margins. However, as noted by Motilal Oswal, the company continues to trade at premium valuation multiples even though recovery remains concentrated in only a few business segments*, suggesting that investors are pricing in a broader recovery that may not materialize in the near term.
