
Two variants of the indigenous long-range multi-calibre rocket system Suryastra were successfully flight-tested from a defence facility off the Odisha coast, marking a significant milestone for India's defence manufacturing capabilities. According to defence officials, the tests were conducted on Monday and Tuesday from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-Sea in full operational configuration. The trials reportedly met all mission objectives with exceptional precision, validating the system's long-range strike capability. As per Dynamite News, both the 150-kilometre and 300-kilometre variants were tested successfully and accurately struck their designated targets, showcasing impressive targeting precision.
The weapon system demonstrated remarkable accuracy across different ranges with exceptional low circular error probable (CEP) measurements. As reported by Nibe Limited, the 150-km range rocket achieved a CEP of around 1.5 metres, while the 300-km variant recorded a CEP of nearly 2 metres. The company stated that the trials have validated Suryastra's long-range precision strike capability, representing a significant milestone in indigenous rocket artillery development. According to Dynamite News, CEP measures a weapon system's accuracy, and lower numbers indicate greater precision, with experts considering such accuracy highly significant for long-range artillery systems designed for modern warfare operations.
Suryastra is a guided long-range rocket artillery system designed to strike enemy command centres, logistics hubs, radar sites and strategic military infrastructure deep inside hostile territory. The system has two variants for different operational roles - the 150-km version supports tactical battlefield and deep-strike operations near active conflict zones, while the 300-km variant substantially enhances India's stand-off strike capability by allowing forces to engage strategic targets far beyond frontline areas without exposing troops to direct combat situations. Unlike conventional artillery systems, guided rockets use advanced navigation and control mechanisms to maintain accuracy over long distances, with Suryastra designed to target high-value assets such as command centres, radar stations, logistics hubs, and military infrastructure.
The successful trials were conducted under an emergency procurement programme of the Indian Army, which had awarded a critical purchase order to Nibe Limited earlier this year. In January, the Indian Army signed a ₹292.69 crore ($31 million) contract with Nibe Limited for the supply of an advanced long-range rocket launcher system with strike capabilities of 150 km and 300 km, with delivery to be completed in tranches within one year. The rocket system is based on the Precise and Universal Launching System (PULS) technology developed by Elbit Systems and manufactured in India through collaboration with the Nibe Group.
The successful trials demonstrate the expanding role of India's private defence industry in advanced weapons manufacturing, an area traditionally dominated by state-run defence establishments. According to the company, the tests were conducted under an emergency procurement programme of the Indian Army, which had awarded a critical purchase order to Nibe Limited earlier this year to accelerate the development and supply of the Suryastra universal rocket launcher along with dedicated long-range rockets. The system is intended to bridge the gap between conventional field artillery and heavier ballistic missile systems by offering a flexible, rapid-response and comparatively cost-effective precision-strike platform for the armed forces. The development aligns with the government's push for defence self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with officials and defence experts believing indigenous systems like Suryastra could strengthen India's military preparedness while reducing dependence on imported weapon platforms.
