Sun Pharma Distributors Ltd has recalled several eye drop brands from the market over contamination concerns, according to a July 17 letter accessed by ANI. The recall covers multiple ophthalmic brands, including Brinolar, Lotepred, Nepalact OD, Depopred, Brinzotim, Nepalact-Z and Toba-F. The company has instructed distributors to immediately cease billing of the affected products and provide details of any stock currently held. As reported by ANI, Sun Pharma has decided as a precautionary measure to discontinue further distribution and withdraw all existing stocks of the above products available in distributor channels.
As reported by ANI, Sun Pharma has requested distributors to send back any stocks of the affected products available with them, as well as those received from any sources on priority. The company stated that distributors are requested to provide details of any stock currently held and send back the products immediately. This precautionary measure aims to prevent further distribution of potentially contaminated eye drops. In a reply to ANI, a Sun Pharma spokesperson confirmed that the company has taken all necessary steps in the best interest of patients and in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements.
According to ANI, experts have warned that contaminated or unsafe eye drops can pose serious health risks, including eye infections and potential vision damage. Unlike many other medicines, eye drops are applied directly to the eyes, making sterility a critical requirement and contamination a major concern. A top expert emphasized that many of these eye drops are prescribed for patients recovering from eye surgery or managing chronic conditions such as glaucoma, eye infections, allergies, and ocular inflammation, where interruption of treatment can have significant consequences. The expert noted that in a country like India, where millions rely on eye drops every day, maintaining sterility during manufacturing is non-negotiable. Even suspected contamination at a manufacturing facility can pose a serious risk to patient safety, making immediate product recalls essential.
Sun Pharma has assured consumers that patient safety remains its highest priority and said it is taking necessary measures to address the contamination issue, as reported by ANI. The company has emphasized that authorities and industry experts have emphasised that consistent monitoring, improved manufacturing processes and strict adherence to safety protocols are essential to protect consumers. A Sun Pharma spokesperson stated that their teams are working diligently to restore the availability of these products so that patients continue to have access to these treatment options. The expert advised that patients should not continue using a recalled product or discontinue treatment on their own, but should contact their ophthalmologist promptly so that an appropriate alternative can be prescribed, ensuring continuity of care while safeguarding vision.
