French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi has significantly expanded its Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad, increasing the facility's employee capacity to 4,500+ from an earlier projection of 2,600. According to latest reports, the expansion adds over 2.7 lakh square metres of workspace at Sanofi Healthcare India Pvt. Ltd.'s existing campus in Hitech City. The expanded campus was inaugurated by Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Minister for IT, Industries and Commerce, Telangana, alongside senior Sanofi executives. As per Reuters, the company is backing the expansion with a multi-hundred-million-dollar investment, aligning with a trend of multinational firms developing innovation-driven GCCs in India. The latest reports confirm the company has invested €400 million in this expansion, positioning it as a game-changer for R&D, AI, data analytics, and pharma innovation in India.
The Hyderabad GCC, established in 2019, has evolved from its initial focus on medical services to supporting global operations across research and development, AI and digital innovation, data analytics, medical affairs, commercial functions, finance, procurement and people services. According to Pharma News Live, the centre underscores the company's shift towards an R&D-driven, AI-powered biopharma model — with India's deep talent pool in innovation and data science playing a critical enabling role. Madeleine Roach, Executive Vice-President and Head of Business Operations at Sanofi, highlighted that India's exceptional talent base is key to accelerating the company's transformation and advancing its mission of improving lives globally. The facility now supports critical processes across the drug research, development, manufacturing and access lifecycle, with the expanded GCC generating diverse roles across artificial intelligence, digital health, intelligent automation, data analytics and enterprise services.
The expanded facility positions the Hyderabad GCC as one of the largest talent concentrations worldwide and among the top three pharma GCCs in India by scale and scope. According to Pharma News Live, with the expanded Hyderabad GCC now supporting advanced capabilities in areas like AI, data analytics and enterprise operations, Sanofi's investment reinforces the city's role as a strategic node in the global pharmaceutical services landscape. The centre functions as a strategic hub supporting end-to-end global processes and delivering enterprise-scale solutions. The expansion reflects a broader shift in India's pharmaceutical GCC ecosystem, with centres increasingly handling higher-value and strategic work rather than only support functions. As per the latest reports, the facility has been reimagined into a hospitality-inspired environment designed with sustainability, inclusivity, and collaboration at its core, promoting employee well-being, teamwork, and operational excellence.
Sanofi has operated in India for nearly seven decades, with activities spanning vaccines, treatments, clinical trials and manufacturing. The company's Goa manufacturing facility supplies products to India and more than 60 other countries. As reported by Pharma News Live, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stated the expansion reflects the state's rising stature as a global hub for innovation-led life sciences, contributing to high-skilled employment and scientific capability building. Minister Sridhar Babu added that the expanded GCC illustrates Hyderabad's evolution from a largely manufacturing-oriented base to a centre of strategic innovation and digital operations for global biopharma. The expansion also deepens Sanofi's integration with India's digital and life sciences ecosystem, with the company reaffirming strong confidence in India's ability to drive the next wave of pharmaceutical transformation.
The expansion comes as part of a broader trend with India hosting over 1,700 GCCs employing nearly 2 million professionals, with projections to exceed 2,400 centres by 2030 as companies increasingly tap into the country's talent and competitive advantages. According to Pharma News Live, industry data shows this growth reflects India's growing importance as a global destination for high-value pharma services, research and digital innovation. The trend includes US-based Tredence announcing a 20,000 square feet delivery and innovation centre in Nanakramguda, planning to grow its workforce from over 400 currently to more than 2,200 by 2027, and Actis-backed Rx Propellant announced a $100 million investment to develop a large-format, integrated life sciences campus in Genome Valley. Industry experts view these investments as part of a broader shift with India's pharma and life sciences GCCs moving up the value chain to take on more strategic, technology-led work.
