
Semiconductor manufacturing company RRP Electronics has entered into a strategic partnership with Orvis Semi Pvt Ltd to develop and manufacture low-light imaging sensors for defence, surveillance, and security applications. According to the latest reports from PTI, this collaboration represents a significant step towards strengthening India's semiconductor and defence electronics ecosystem under the Government's Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and Viksit Bharat initiatives. The partnership will focus on developing next-generation low-light image sensors and imaging modules for applications across defence, homeland security, industrial automation, surveillance, aerospace, automotive, and other mission-critical sectors. By combining RRP Electronics' semiconductor manufacturing capabilities with Orvis Semi's expertise in imaging technologies, the companies aim to accelerate the commercialization of advanced indigenous imaging solutions.
Under the leadership of Prof. Mukul Sarkar of IIT Delhi, Orvis Semi has been developing advanced CMOS-based Low Light Imaging Sensors capable of digitising images while functioning as intelligent surveillance devices. As reported by the company statement, the partnership brings together Orvis Semi's expertise in sensor design with RRP Electronics' advanced semiconductor packaging and manufacturing capabilities. The collaboration significantly strengthens India's semiconductor and defence electronics ecosystem under national initiatives like Make in India. The new sensors are designed to work like smart surveillance tools because they can digitise images and handle low-light situations better than older systems, offering more use, more flexibility, and better chances for local production than the older image intensifier tube method. Unlike conventional image intensifier tube technology, the advanced CMOS-based sensors offer enhanced functionality, broader applications and potential for scalable indigenous manufacturing.
RRP Electronics will leverage its OSAT setup in Maharashtra to assemble and package the sensors, with the company describing itself as Maharashtra's first operational OSAT facility. The company has already invested in a dedicated mask set at a commercial fabrication facility for this project, demonstrating its commitment to building a complete Indian value chain. RRP's group company, RRP S4E Innovation, will help turn the sensors into full electro-optical solutions, creating a complete Indian value chain for low-light imaging technology. The big idea is to build a full chain inside India, encompassing sensor design, chip packaging, assembly, and system integration, all happening locally to reduce dependence on imported technologies. RRP Electronics will use its in-house OSAT infrastructure for sensor assembly and packaging, establishing a complete value chain within India for advanced low-light imaging technology.
