Ola Electric has officially launched the Roadster X Plus electric motorcycle in India, marking a significant milestone with government certification for its indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery. The 9.1kWh variant will begin deliveries from January 20, 2026, while the 4.5kWh variant is scheduled for delivery from January 2, 2026, according to the company's official website. The certification was granted by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT), Manesar under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989, after the motorcycle successfully completed rigorous testing for construction safety, electrical systems, range, braking performance, and environmental compliance. According to The Economic Times, the testing process covered parameters such as functional safety, electrical safety, braking performance, electromagnetic compatibility, noise levels, range and gradeability as required by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for battery-operated vehicles. With this approval, Ola Electric will begin deliveries of the Roadster X+, marking it as the first electric motorcycle in India certified with a completely in-house developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack.
Expanding its Roadster lineup, Ola Electric has announced the premium Roadster Pro variant, which was unveiled at the company's annual Sankalp event on August 15, 2024. The Roadster Pro will be available in two battery configurations - an 8kWh variant priced at ₹1.99 lakh and a 16kWh variant at ₹2.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The premium 16kWh variant offers an impressive 579km IDC-certified range and can achieve a top speed of 194kmph, while the 8kWh variant provides 315km range with a 154kmph top speed. The Roadster Pro is expected to be fully launched near the end of 2025, with deliveries scheduled for January 2026. The motorcycle features advanced specifications including a 52kW electric motor producing 105Nm torque, enabling 0-40kmph acceleration in just 1.2 seconds and 0-60kmph in 1.9 seconds for the 16kWh variant.
The Roadster X Plus represents a major technological achievement with India's first dry electrode cell - the 4680 Bharat Cell - built entirely from the ground up. The motorcycle becomes the first electric motorcycle in India to be certified with this indigenous battery technology. The 4680 Bharat Cell measures 46 mm in diameter and 80 mm in height, using a cylindrical format that improves heat dissipation. These cells are manufactured at Ola Electric's Gigafactory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, significantly reducing dependence on foreign supply chain elements. According to The Economic Times, the 9.1kWh battery pack has received ARAI certification under AIS-156 Amendment 4, clearing comprehensive safety tests including water immersion, thermal runaway, fire safety, vibration, and mechanical shock. An Ola Electric spokesperson stated that "the government certification of the Roadster X+ is a major milestone in Ola Electric's journey towards building end-to-end EV technology in India" and "with the Roadster X+ (9.1kWh), we are delivering an unmatched range along with superior performance, safety, and reliability, powered entirely by our own cell and battery technology."
The Roadster X Plus is available in two variants with the 4.5kWh variant priced at ₹1.29 lakh offering 225km claimed range, while the 9.1kWh variant costs ₹1.89 lakh and delivers 500km claimed range with 125kmph top speed for both variants. According to The Economic Times, the Roadster X+ offers an industry-leading range of up to 500 km, enabling long-distance and inter-city rides beyond urban centres. The premium Roadster Pro elevates the feature set significantly with a 10-inch TFT touchscreen, USD (upside down) forks, and dual-channel switchable ABS with disc brakes. The Roadster Pro includes four riding modes - Hyper, Sport, Normal, and Eco plus two DIY modes, and is set to feature an ADAS suite alongside Wheelie and Stoppie control modes. The Roadster Pro is positioned to compete with premium electric motorcycles like the Oben Rorr and Ultraviolette F77 Mach 2, offering significantly higher performance metrics and advanced technology features compared to the entry-level Roadster X Plus.
With the certification of the Roadster X Plus, Ola Electric has extended the use of its 4680 Bharat Cell technology across its electric two-wheeler lineup, with the battery platform now used in both scooters and motorcycles. According to The Economic Times, Ola Electric has extended the 4680 Bharat Cell platform across its two-wheeler portfolio, including scooters and motorcycles such as Ola Shakti. The Ola S1 Pro Plus scooter is already receiving deliveries with the indigenous battery technology. The company has stated that the same cell technology will also be used in its upcoming electric motorcycle platform referred to as Ola Shakti. This certification is seen as a defining step to accelerate EV adoption in India's motorcycle-dominated two-wheeler market. The company also diversified into energy storage with the launch of Ola Shakti, India's most advanced Residential Battery Energy Storage System, and showcased the Diamondhead electric superbike concept at the Sankalp 2025 event.
