The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner has intervened dramatically by halting the Tata Trusts' board meeting, responding to fresh allegations of transgressions against the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act. According to The Economic Times, a probe has now been initiated into the structure of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust board, with all future meetings facing postponement until an inspector's report is completed. The trusts have postponed crucial board meetings that were scheduled to discuss Tata Sons' potential public listing and board representation. Legal challenges and differing views among trustees are cited as reasons for the delay, as the trusts reinforce their stance on keeping Tata Sons privately held to ensure alignment with the majority institutional position.
Noel Tata has announced his retirement as vice-chairman of Titan Company effective November 2025, marking another milestone in the Tata Group's ongoing leadership transition. The announcement was made during Titan's 42nd Annual General Meeting (AGM), where chairman S. Vijayakumar confirmed this would be Tata's last meeting as vice-chairman. As reported by Indian Television Dot Com, Tata's retirement follows the Tata Group's long-standing governance policy under which executives retire from operational roles at 65 and step down from non-executive board positions at age 70. Tata turns 70 in November 2025, making him eligible for this mandatory retirement. Paying tribute to Tata's more than 23-year association with the company, Vijayakumar acknowledged his "visionary leadership, strategic guidance and unwavering commitment to Tata values" that played a key role in Titan's "remarkable growth and transformation."
According to The Times of India, Leah, Maya and Neville Tata - the children of Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata - have become shareholders of Tata Sons for the first time. The three siblings, who all work within the Tata Group, inherited their shares from their grandmother Simone Tata following her death in December 2025. As reported by The Times of India, Simone's holding was split equally among her son and grandchildren, with each receiving two Tata Sons shares. This inheritance comes as Noel prepares to step down from his operational roles, with his retirement from Titan marking the end of his more than 23-year association with the company. Noel's departure from Titan, where he became chairman in 2014 overseeing rapid expansion of Westside and Zudio, and took over as chairman of Voltas in 2017, represents another significant change in the Tata Group's leadership structure.
According to The Times of India, each Tata Sons share is estimated to be worth ₹4-5 crore, making the inherited stakes significant in value despite their modest number. The FY25 documents showed Simone holding eight Tata Sons shares, which were distributed among her family members. Noel's personal stake increased from 4,058 shares to 4,060 shares, while his children were added as new shareholders with two shares each. As reported by The Times of India, Noel's older half-brother Jimmy Tata holds 3,262 Tata Sons shares. Beyond his Tata Sons holdings, Noel currently serves as chairman of Tata Investment Corporation, Tata International, Trent Limited and Voltas Limited, and is also a non-executive director at Tata Steel.
According to The Times of India, Ratan Tata, who died in October 2024, continues to be listed as holding 3,368 shares - he had bequeathed these to his two philanthropic foundations, but the transfer process is still pending. The report indicates that Tata Sons has not altered its equity capital in decades, with almost all current individual shareholders acquiring their holdings through inheritance. Other notable shareholders include Shapoor Mistry (54 shares), Noel's nephews Firoz and Zahan Mistry (27 shares each), and Piloo Tata (487 shares), among others. Noel's departure from Titan, where he became chairman in 2014 overseeing rapid expansion of Westside and Zudio, and took over as chairman of Voltas in 2017, represents another significant change in the Tata Group's leadership structure.
