Nelco Ltd. shares declined as much as 12.45% on Tuesday, marking the biggest single-day fall for the stock since March 2020. According to reports from CNBC TV18, the stock opened at ₹1,092.30 compared with the previous close of ₹1,081.50, before touching an intraday high of ₹1,098.00 before witnessing heavy selling. The stock subsequently touched a low of ₹951.00 and was trading at around ₹946.90, based on the latest price data. The decline came just a day after the stock hit a fresh 52-week high of ₹1,120 on Monday, August 18, representing a 15.1% drop from those levels. Despite the recent decline, the stock remains up 90.2% from its 52-week low of ₹500.1, which it had hit on March 30, 2026. As per NSE data, Nelco has a total market capitalisation of ₹2,474.66 crore as of August 17, 2026.
The sharp decline followed Nelco's announcement on Monday regarding a strategic investment agreement. As reported by CNBC TV18, the company entered agreements with Lunar Holdco Inc to invest $20 million via subscription to compulsorily convertible debentures (CCDs). The CCDs carry a 7% annual compounded return and are convertible into equity shares of Lunar in accordance with their terms. The investment was paid for in cash via wire transfer and does not confer control over Lunar. The shareholding percentage is not determinable at present and will depend on the occurrence of conversion events and other terms specified in the CCD documentation. According to latest reports, the investment provides Nelco with an opportunity to participate early in the emerging direct-to-device satellite connectivity market in South Asia. The agreement was approved by the board of directors and shareholders, as confirmed in the regulatory filing.
Lunar Holdco Inc, doing business as Elveo Mobile, is a Delaware-based satellite communications company focused on developing a next-generation global NGSO satellite network. The network is designed to support direct-to-device (D2D), Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile satellite connectivity services. The firm is backed by strategic investors, including SES, a global satellite communications operator. It was formed through the merger of Lynk Global and Omnispace and is currently pre-revenue until the full deployment of its satellite constellation. As per Nelco's regulatory filing, Lunar has not yet commenced commercial operations in India, with the commencement of services subject to obtaining applicable approvals, licenses and authorisations under telecommunications, satellite communications and other applicable laws. The collaboration will give Nelco strategic access to Elveo's next-generation S-band NGSO constellation, allowing it to bring satellite-to-cellular (D2D) and low-latency IoT connectivity to automotive, maritime, and enterprise sectors in South Asia by 2028.
The investment represents a high-conviction bet on the future of unified space-ground networks, establishing Nelco as a first-mover in the South Asian Direct-to-Device (D2D) satcom ecosystem. As reported by CNBC TV18, the collaboration will give Nelco strategic access to Elveo's next-generation S-band NGSO constellation, allowing it to bring satellite-to-cellular (D2D) and low-latency IoT connectivity to automotive, maritime, and enterprise sectors in South Asia by 2028. The investment mitigates direct investment risk by using 7% interest-yielding CCDs that offer structured downside protection before converting to equity. Nelco's investment strengthens its defense against upcoming competitive pressures from global satellite constellations like Starlink and OneWeb in India. By establishing early infrastructure partnerships, Nelco is building a highly resilient, high-margin enterprise services pipeline that should boost its valuation multiples as commercial spectrum guidelines are cleared. The investment positions Nelco to target high-margin enterprise segments like maritime tracking, automotive telematics, energy grid monitoring, and defense.
The decline appears more like a risk re-rating following a strong rally rather than evidence of a deterioration in Nelco's core business. According to latest reports, Nelco had gained approximately 50% year-to-date, 63% over six months and 25% in the past month before today's selloff. The sharp rally had already resulted in elevated expectations around the company's satellite growth prospects. The announcement of a sizeable investment in a pre-revenue satellite venture may therefore have prompted investors to reassess the risk associated with those expectations. NELCO shares are currently trading 12.3% lower at ₹948.1 on Tuesday, with the ₹951 intraday low representing an important near-term reference point and the previous close of ₹1,081.50 a major level that the stock would need to reclaim to reverse some of the immediate damage. At 10:07 AM, Nelco shares were trading at ₹978.30 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, declining 9.54%. The stock's recent performance was supported by Nelco's consolidated net profit of ₹2.34 crore for Q1 FY27, up 30% YoY compared to ₹1.8 crore in Q1 FY26, demonstrating robust financial fundamentals backing the strategic satellite investment.
