Meta Platforms has officially implemented its major workforce reduction, notifying approximately 8,000 employees that they are being laid off as part of a comprehensive restructuring. According to Bloomberg, the layoffs began with Singapore-based workers receiving notifications at 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday, followed by employees in the U.K. and U.S. as their workdays started. The company had just under 80,000 employees at the end of March, making these cuts represent about 10% of the total workforce. As reported by The New York Post, all affected employees were notified of their terminations between March 4 and March 25 via a letter from Janelle Gale, Meta's chief people officer. The vast majority of impacted positions are in software engineering and recruiting, though other roles affected include product and design management, data science, and several managerial positions.
The layoffs represent the first wave of a major restructuring that Meta has framed as necessary to fund its push into artificial intelligence. As reported by Bloomberg, upward of 7,000 workers will be redirected into newly created AI-focused teams, including Applied AI Engineering, Agent Transformation Accelerator XFN, and Central Analytics. Meta Chief People Officer Janelle Gale announced that managerial layers are being reduced across the company, with Gale writing in a memo that "We're now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure with smaller teams of pods/cohorts that can move faster and with more ownership." According to Reuters, Gale told employees earlier this week that the company planned to move around 7,000 workers into more AI-focused work. An internal memo circulated the company last month preempted the dismissals, with some managerial roles also being cut as org leaders incorporated AI native design principles into their new org structures. This latest round of cuts is expected to hit Meta's engineering and product teams in particular, with additional layoffs potentially coming later in the year.
The layoffs come despite Meta reporting record financial performance in the first quarter of 2026. As reported by The New York Times, Meta reported record revenue of $56.31 billion ($78.78 billion) in Q1 2026, with a jump in profit to $26.8 billion ($37.49 billion). CEO Mark Zuckerberg thanked exiting employees for their work and wrote in an email that he was optimistic about Meta's push into AI, stating "Success isn't a given. AI is the most consequential technology of our lifetimes. The companies that lead the way will define the next generation." The current restructuring is the largest companywide round of cuts since CEO Mark Zuckerberg's 2022-2023 "Year of Efficiency" campaign, which eliminated roughly 21,000 positions. Under Zuckerberg, AI has become the lens through which every major decision at the company is made. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has made AI the company's top priority, committing all resources to keeping pace with rivals like Alphabet Inc.'s Google and OpenAI.
The layoffs have affected Meta's Puget Sound region operations significantly, with 168 employees laid off in King County as part of plans to cut 10% of its Reality Labs division by the end of March. According to KOMO News, Meta has approximately 8,000 workers in the Puget Sound region, with layoffs taking effect on May 8 and spanning multiple locations. The affected sites include 1101 Dexter Ave N, Seattle (approximately 43 affected employees), 1531 Utah Avenue S, Seattle (approximately 10 employees), 1550 121st Ave NE, Bellevue (approximately 9 employees), 9845 Willows Road NE, Redmond (approximately 67 employees), and approximately 39 remote employees who reside in Washington. There have been no filings through Washington's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) system as of reporting. In Ireland, the company cut around 350 jobs, an estimated fifth of its workforce there, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified as the information is private. A Meta representative declined to comment on specific cuts but said the company has notified affected employees and the Irish government.
Affected employees will receive a severance payment of 16 weeks plus two weeks for every year of completed services, minus their notice period. As reported by Bloomberg, U.S. workers losing their jobs are offered a base severance of 16 weeks' pay, with an additional two weeks added for every full year they have been continuously employed at the company. Health insurance will be extended to cover both employees and their dependents for a period of 18 months. Packages for employees outside the U.S. will vary by country. Meta is offering external job search assistance via Lee Hecht Harrison to affected employees. The layoffs are part of a broader tech industry trend, with 329 layoffs affecting 142,223 people in 2026 so far, compared to 783 layoffs affecting 245,953 people in 2025. Other major tech companies have announced significant cuts, including Oracle's 30,000 job cuts and Dell's 11,000 job cuts in 2026. However, analysts at Evercore estimate the cuts will generate only about $3 billion in savings, which is just a small portion of Meta's projected capital expenditures this year, which could hit $145 billion, and the additional hundreds of billions that the company anticipates spending on AI infrastructure before the end of the decade.
