
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has commissioned a 1 MWh battery energy storage system at its Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana. According to the latest company statement, this represents a pilot initiative where a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been integrated into the facility's internal electricity distribution network. The company announced this development on Wednesday as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its green energy ecosystem and reduce manufacturing-related carbon emissions.
The battery storage system addresses a specific operational challenge identified at the facility. As reported by ANI, in 2025, the company had installed a 20 MWp solar power project at the Kharkhoda facility. During facility holidays, the solar power plant continues to generate electricity; however, it cannot be utilized due to the absence of demand. The BESS will store surplus electricity generated during low-demand periods and holidays, then supply it when needed, helping improve the utilisation of renewable energy while also enhancing grid stability. The newly installed system is designed to address this challenge by storing excess power for later consumption when the factory is operational.
According to ANI, the BESS will provide multiple operational benefits beyond energy storage. The system will help improve grid stability and reduce environmental impact. Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director & CEO Hisashi Takeuchi stated that the company remains aligned with India's push towards building self-reliant and sustainable energy ecosystems. He noted that with a lifecycle of about 15 years, BESS will help reduce nearly 54 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. The system has been integrated into the Kharkhoda facility's internal electricity distribution network as a pilot project to enhance renewable energy utilisation and support India's transition towards cleaner and more resilient industrial operations.
Looking ahead, Takeuchi outlined the company's sustainability commitments and their alignment with global environmental goals. As reported by ANI, he stated that production volumes will increase from current levels but the company remains committed to reducing both the carbon intensity and absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from its manufacturing operations. This initiative represents part of the company's broader strategy to increase renewable energy adoption across its manufacturing facilities. The commissioning of the battery energy storage system is aligned with parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation's environmental roadmap, which targets a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO emissions by FY2030-31 compared with FY2022-23, demonstrating the company's continued efforts toward building a self-reliant energy ecosystem.
