Maruti Suzuki India has achieved a significant milestone by dispatching 1 million vehicles through its in-plant railway terminals since 2023, marking a landmark achievement in the company's green logistics journey. According to reports from Rediff Moneynews, the automaker reached this milestone through operations at two manufacturing sites in Gujarat and Haryana. Operations from the in-plant railway sidings at Hansalpur (Gujarat) commenced in March 2023 and from the Manesar (Haryana) railway siding in June 2025. As reported by Rediff Moneynews, Maruti Suzuki is the first and only passenger vehicle manufacturer in India to have in-plant railway sidings at its manufacturing facilities.
As reported by Rediff Moneynews, in the current financial year, 70 per cent of the company's total rail-based vehicle dispatches have been through these two in-plant railway sidings. The company's rail-based vehicle dispatches have crossed 3 lakh units as of August 31 of this fiscal year. Of the total 10 lakh dispatches so far, around 7.9 lakh units were transported via the Gujarat railway siding while the Manesar railway siding ferried 2.1 lakh vehicles. According to Rediff Moneynews, Maruti Suzuki's share of rail-based vehicle dispatches has grown from 5 per cent in FY 2014-15 to 26.5 per cent in FY 2025-26.
According to Rediff Moneynews, an in-plant railway terminal inside a manufacturing facility allows goods to be loaded onto freight trains within the plant, eliminating the need for trucks to access the nearest railway stations before entering the supply network. As reported by the company, Maruti Suzuki is the first and only passenger vehicle manufacturer in India to have in-plant railway sidings at its manufacturing facilities. The shift of vehicle transportation from road to rail through these in-plant facilities has helped avoid greenhouse gas emissions, while reducing fuel consumption and easing overall road congestion. As reported by Rediff Moneynews, Maruti Suzuki's mid-term goal is to increase rail-based vehicle dispatches to 35 per cent by FY 2030-31 through continued investment in rail infrastructure, including an in-plant siding at its new Kharkhoda facility.
