According to reports from Business Standard, Luminous Power Technologies has announced plans to invest ₹2,000 crore over five years as part of its strategy to achieve 3X growth in the next 4-5 years. The company's growth strategy is built on four key pillars: strengthening inverter and battery business, expansion of solar business, owning technology from both hardware and software perspectives, and operational excellence. Managing Director and CEO Vivek Abrol outlined the company's transformation from a power backup firm to an energy solutions company, emphasizing that the investment is aligned with technology transitions and addressing growing demand for lithium-ion batteries in their solar product portfolio.
As reported by Business Standard, Luminous is establishing a 1.2 Gigawatt solar cell manufacturing plant in Gopalpur, Odisha, which will feed its PV module manufacturing facility in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand. The facility is expected to produce its first batch from May 2027. The company is also setting up an advanced energy storage and manufacturing plant in Angul, Odisha, as part of its comprehensive solar and energy storage strategy. According to Abrol, the company initially wants to focus on in-house cell manufacturing and making the facility operationally viable with module manufacturing, before reassessing feasibility between build versus buy options. Once the company goes beyond its 1.2 GW capacity, it plans to scale through tolling-based mechanisms with vendor partners to improve both cost-to-market and time-to-market.
According to Business Standard, Luminous commissioned a 500 Megawatt Hour lithium-ion battery assembly line at Baddi in January, which supports standalone battery packs and modules for stationary BESS. The facility can produce individual packs from 1.2 kWh to 16 kWh with system-level scalability up to 112 kWh. The company assembles lithium-ion cells to make battery packs and is exploring alternative chemistries like sodium, evaluating different applications, cost of ownership, and safety aspects to determine optimal chemistry for specific applications. As per Abrol, the company will address applications inside homes and BESS solutions for small C&I applications, which could replace DG sets, while lead-acid has been a large-scale and successful chemistry in the Indian power backup space.
As reported by Business Standard, Luminous currently has manufacturing facilities across multiple locations including Gagret in Himachal Pradesh, Rudrapur in Uttarakhand, Hosur in Tamil Nadu, and Haridwar in Uttarakhand. The company's app ConnectX provides visibility of around 100,000 connected homes, enabling monitoring of solar energy generation, consumption, battery usage, and grid export. Abrol emphasized that hybrid inverters will become increasingly relevant as policy frameworks evolve and battery solutions become more accessible, while the company wants to strengthen its distribution and system-integrator network to address the market faster and in a scalable way. One major challenge for consumers is deciding which company to buy panels or inverters from, and Luminous addresses this gap by addressing different parts of the solar solution.
