Larsen & Toubro's transportation infrastructure business vertical has secured major design and build orders for two key systems packages of the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line 1). According to reports from CNBC TV18, The Economic Times, and Business Standard, the company announced the orders on Tuesday, October 27, with L&T classifying orders in the ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore range as 'major'. The order includes Contract Package CP09—track works and electrical systems, and Contract Package CP10—signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors (PSD). This will be the first underground metro project in Bangladesh, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Under CP09, L&T, along with its Japanese partner Sumitomo Corporation, will undertake design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of complete track works, power supply & distribution system, traction substations, overhead catenary system and associated electrical facilities across the corridor. As reported by CNBC TV18, The Economic Times, and Business Standard, CP10 will execute signalling, telecommunication and platform screen door for the entire network. The Dhaka Metro Line 1 project spans approximately 31 km and includes the Airport Route from Kamalapur to Airport and the Purbachal Route from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal, with 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj. Together, the two packages form the core operational systems of Dhaka Metro Line 1, delivering a safe, reliable and world-class urban transit solution for the people of Dhaka.
Commenting on the order, Ramkumar S, Senior Executive Vice President & Head—Transportation Infrastructure, L&T, stated that repeat orders from Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) are a testament to L&T's capabilities in delivering large scale, integrated urban transit projects globally. According to CNBC TV18, The Economic Times, and Business Standard, he highlighted the company's strong track record of delivering E&M systems for the Dhaka Metro Line 6 with highest standards of quality and timely execution, and recent execution of Jakarta Metro. "With a strong track record of delivering E&M systems for the Dhaka Metro Line 6 with the highest standards of quality and timely execution, and more recently, for the Jakarta Metro, which is under execution, we are well positioned to leverage our expertise in seamlessly integrating multiple systems in close coordination with OEMs and stakeholders," Ramkumar S noted. The transportation infrastructure vertical is a leading EPC player that has delivered complex rail infrastructure projects in India and international markets, consistently maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and project execution.
According to experts cited by The Economic Times, the engineering and construction giant could report double-digit revenue growth supported by strong order inflows and steady execution. The company's consolidated revenue is expected to rise about 10% YoY to between ₹74,810 crore and ₹75,110 crore, driven by steady execution of its order book across segments. However, L&T's profitability and margins may come under pressure due to geopolitical headwinds affecting project execution, especially in the West Asia region, with net profit likely to remain flat on a yearly basis. L&T is scheduled to report its second quarter results on Tuesday, with the numbers usually announced after market closing hours.
