
The Transportation Infrastructure business vertical of L&T has secured a significant order through a consortium with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to design and build the Automated People Mover (APM) System for Phase 1 of Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai. According to company project classification, the contract value ranges between ₹2,500 crore to ₹5,000 crore, representing a large order as per company classification. The project is being developed by Dubai Aviation City Corporation and implemented through Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects. As per Business Standard, this represents L&T's 11th order win in a month, demonstrating the company's strong momentum in securing major infrastructure projects.
The project represents a key component of the airport's long-term expansion programme designed as a multi-phase development. Once fully developed, Al Maktoum International Airport will become the world's largest airport, with a capacity of 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight annually. This ambitious expansion will position the airport as a major global aviation hub. The scope of work for the MHI-L&T consortium encompasses the turnkey delivery of a fully integrated APM System, covering design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning and operational readiness of all associated infrastructure and systems. Under the Design-and-Build contract, L&T will undertake the design, procurement, delivery and integration of critical APM infrastructure and systems, including guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution, signalling and telecommunications, onboard communication systems for vehicles, platform screen doors and depot equipment. As per Business Standard, the consortium leverages MHI's proven APM Systems and L&T's extensive integrated systems experience supported by world-class engineering designs centre, enabling execution with strong focus on safety and quality. According to Business Standard, Ramkumar S, L&T's executive vice-president and head, Transportation Infrastructure, emphasized that this project exemplifies the scale and complexity of integrated APM Rail Systems that L&T is uniquely positioned to deliver, with challenging execution milestones, advanced technologies and multiple system interfaces including guideway, power supply, state-of-the-art telecom, platform screen doors and depot equipment.
This latest contract win is part of L&T's exceptional order acquisition streak since July 20. According to CNBC TV18, the company has secured two large orders, three major, mega and ultra-mega orders in the last month. The total project wins range from ₹95,000 crore at the lower end to ₹1.3 lakh crore at the upper end of classification ranges. The company's stock performance reflects this momentum, with shares climbing 0.62% higher on the BSE at 10:38 am on Thursday. As per latest market data, the stock was trading 0.81% higher at ₹4,074 around 11:43 AM. The stock has risen 6% over the month but fallen 2% on a year-to-date basis. The stock performance demonstrates investor confidence in the company's continued order acquisition capabilities and strategic positioning in the railway and transit sector.
The Al Maktoum International Airport APM System project further strengthens L&T's credentials in the West Asia region and positions the company to capitalise on emerging opportunities in the railway and transit sector across West Asia.
