Despite the market sell-off, multiple brokerages have reiterated their positive ratings on Kotak Mahindra Bank following the CEO transition announcement, with ICICI Securities maintaining its 'Buy' rating with an unchanged target price of ₹480, implying an upside of around 17% from current levels. According to NDTV Profit, the brokerage cites the bank's strong fundamentals, attractive valuations, and supportive sector outlook, even as it flags succession-related uncertainty as a key near-term monitorable. Morgan Stanley maintains its 'Overweight' rating with a target price of ₹500, Nomura reiterates its 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹460 per share, and Jefferies reiterates its 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹450 per share. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, analysts are broadly constructive but flag near-term uncertainty. Macquarie Research warned that uncertainty around leadership succession is likely to weigh on investor sentiment and keep the stock under pressure in the near term, while noting that the early commencement of the succession process should facilitate an orderly transition.
Kotak Mahindra Bank announced that its Managing Director and CEO, Ashok Vaswani, will step down at the end of his current term on December 31, 2026. In a regulatory filing on Saturday (June 27, 2026), the private sector lender said Vaswani's current term will conclude on December 31, 2026, with the CEO deciding against seeking another term for personal reasons. The bank informed the exchanges that Vaswani does not wish to seek reappointment upon the completion of his current term, with the announcement coming more than six months before the end of his tenure. The board has respected his decision and formally initiated the process for the appointment of a new managing director and chief executive, with the process to be completed within applicable regulatory timelines. Vaswani, who has led the bank since January 1, 2024, will not seek reappointment citing personal reasons for his decision. The veteran banker had previously worked with Barclays and Citigroup before joining Kotak Mahindra Bank.
Nomura has identified Anup Kumar Saha, Paritosh Kashyap, and Jaideep Hansraj as potential internal contenders for the CEO role. Among them, Nomura believes Anup Kumar Saha appears to be the strongest fit, noting that Saha leads businesses that sit at the centre of Kotak's long-term strategy, including consumer banking, marketing and digital transformation. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, Saha was appointed as a Whole-time Director by the RBI in March 2026 and previously spent 14 years at ICICI Bank across retail banking and credit cards, followed by eight years at Bajaj Finance, where he eventually became Managing Director and CEO. Nomura emphasized that Saha combines deep consumer finance expertise with proven digital execution capabilities, making him well aligned with the bank's strategic priorities. Jefferies sees Anup Kumar Saha as a key internal contender, though a 6-month process including external candidates may create overhang. The brokerage noted that Saha's Whole Time Director appointment received RBI approval cleanly in March 2026, an important pre-validation signal, with a Board recommendation by September-October 2026 being plausible. Apart from Vaswani, the bank's senior leadership now consists of three whole-time directors — Anup Kumar Saha, Jaideep Hansraj, and Paritosh Kashyap.
The bank is expected to submit names for the new CEO around four months before Vaswani's term ends, which will be around late-August, early-September. Sources indicate that the lender will be submitting a shortlist of three candidates for the consideration of the RBI. According to Macquarie Research, the Board has initiated the succession process and will be required to submit a panel of candidates (preferably two internal and one external candidate) to the RBI for approval. While the early commencement of the process should facilitate an orderly transition, the brokerage believes the uncertainty around leadership succession is likely to weigh on investor sentiment and keep the stock under pressure in the near term. The structured approach ensures compliance with banking sector regulations while maintaining the bank's operational continuity during the leadership transition period.
