Broker JM Financial has downgraded Jyothy Labs to 'Reduce' with a revised target price of ₹205, down from the earlier target of ₹230. As per The Hindu BusinessLine, the downgrade reflects weak earnings performance and sustained margin pressures. The current market price stands at ₹200, with the stock trading at a discount to the revised target. The broker has trimmed the target multiple to 23x from 24x earlier and cut FY27/28E estimates by 32%/16% respectively, citing weak earnings visibility despite not demanding valuations.
The company's consolidated net profit declined 51% year-on-year to ₹47.6 crore, compared with ₹96.8 crore in the year-ago quarter, as reported by NDTV Profit. The Board of Directors approved the unaudited financial results on August 12, 2026, with the results subjected to a limited review by statutory auditors B S R & Co. LLP. Earnings per share (EPS) declined to ₹1.30 from ₹2.64 in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The significant profit decline was driven by gross margin contraction to 38.5% from 48% in Q1FY26, attributed to abnormal inflation in raw materials and packaging costs. According to Mint, the West Asia conflict caused sharp volatility in global crude oil prices, which surged past $100 per barrel as the US-Iran war escalated. Prices of linear alkyl benzene, used in making laundry powders and dishwashing liquids, rose 5% quarter-on-quarter and 15% year-on-year in the April-June quarter, as reported by analysts at Nomura Group. Despite taking a blended 4-4.5% price hike in the June quarter, the company's operating EBITDA margin declined sharply to 8.4% from 16.5% a year ago. Chairperson and Managing Director M. R. Jyothy cautioned that raw material and packaging costs are unlikely to come down immediately, with benefits from lower crude-linked inputs likely to be visible only gradually and more meaningfully from October.
Shares of Jyothy Labs Ltd. opened at ₹203.50 against a previous close of ₹204.04 and extended losses by up to 5% to hit an intraday low of ₹190.11 on the NSE on Wednesday, August 12. The stock last traded 3.52% lower at ₹196.85 on the NSE, reflecting sharp investor reaction to the disappointing quarterly results. According to NDTV Profit, the stock has shed 4% in one week, 30% on a year-to-date basis, and 415% in the last one year, with the company commanding a market cap of ₹7,270.85 crore as per NSE data. On the same day, the company announced the strategic sale of its Jammu facility leasehold rights for ₹9.93 crore to Aikyam Flexipack Private Limited, marking a significant divestment of non-core assets. The transaction involves the assignment of rights for a 15-kanal plot located at Lane 2, Phase II, SIDCO Industrial Complex, Bari Brahmana, Jammu & Kashmir, with closure expected on or before March 31, 2027.
The company's performance was significantly impacted by German partner Henkel AG's decision in May to walk away from a 15-year licensing deal for the Pril and Fa brands. As per Mint, Pril accounts for 25-30% of dishwash sales, which translates to 8-10% of JYL's overall sales, while the contribution of Fa is not significant. The company has moved from a 5-segment reporting model to a three business segment model - fabric care, home care and personal care. According to Mint, the company is in litigation over Henkel's exit but did not elaborate on the matter, stating there is no specific clause requiring them to wait for a certain period, with the matter before the court. The company has launched Exo dishwash liquid which has performed reasonably well, as per management expectations. For the full financial year 2027, the Mumbai-based company expects double-digit growth, excluding the Pril business, with the company believing it will get back on the growth track as quickly as possible.
Despite the profit challenges, Jyothy Labs managed to achieve revenue from operations growth of 3% to ₹773 crore from ₹751 crore a year earlier, according to the latest performance presentation. The company reported revenue from operations of ₹773 crore in Q1FY27, compared to ₹751.21 crore during the previous year ended June 2025. Excluding Pril and Fa contributions, the company's value growth stood at 8.1% with volume growth of 5.3%, demonstrating underlying business resilience. However, as per JM Financial, this revenue growth is relatively weaker compared to larger HPC peers within their coverage universe. The divergence between top-line resilience and bottom-line pressure highlights significant margin erosion across key segments, with high competitive intensity and lack of commensurate price hikes contributing to sharp margin compression versus peers.
The company's segment-wise performance revealed mixed results across its business portfolio. Fabric Care, the largest segment contributor, saw revenue rise by 14.1% to ₹399 crore from ₹349 crore, with volume growth of 10.2%, accounting for 52% of the firm's total business share. According to Mint, fabric care and homecare makes up 90% of the company's business. The company's flagship product Ujala Supreme continues to maintain its market leadership in the fabric whitener category. Personal Care emerged as the only segment to show resilience, with profit rising by 15% to ₹13 crore from ₹11 crore, driven by stable performance in body soap and toothpaste, holding a 12% share of the business. As per JM Financial, while execution on Fabric Care has improved, more work needs to be done to strengthen its position and accelerate growth in other core categories, which would entail higher investments. Management expects to deliver double-digit revenue growth from the current quarter with high single-digit volume growth through the year, while emphasizing diversification efforts to reduce dependence on crude-linked raw materials.
