JSW Infrastructure Ltd shares gained nearly 5% on Tuesday after securing a major port infrastructure project from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA). According to latest exchange data, shares were trading at ₹280.20 on the NSE, up 4.42%. The company has received a Letter of Award (LoA) for the integrated development of the Outer Container Terminal and Berths 1-5 at Netaji Subhash Dock (NSD) under the Kolkata Dock System. The project was awarded on June 8, 2026, on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, with execution planned over a 30-year concession period.
The latest award builds on JSW Infrastructure's earlier project for the reconstruction of Berth 8 and mechanisation of Berths 7 and 8 at Netaji Subhash Dock, which has a capacity of 0.45 million TEUs and is expected to commence interim operations shortly. The combined projects are expected to create container handling capacity of around 0.93 million TEUs in two phases. The project involves building two outer container handling berths and taking over existing 5 berths at NSD with a combined capacity to handle 0.93 million TEUs (equivalent to 13 million tonnes per annum) of containers and multipurpose cargo. Together, the two projects are expected to raise the company's container handling capacity at Kolkata Dock System to nearly 1.4 million TEUs. The company expects the projects to address capacity constraints at NSD, improve berth productivity through mechanisation, reduce vessel turnaround times, and strengthen logistics efficiency in eastern India, supported by strong cargo demand from the Kolkata metropolitan region and a well-established hinterland.
The win marks JSW Infrastructure's second project from SMPA within a year, reinforcing its position as a key private-sector participant in India's port privatisation and PPP programme. The company's overall container handling capacity is projected to reach approximately 1.8 million TEUs upon completion of identified growth projects. This expansion aligns with JSW Infrastructure's strategy to diversify into the container segment and scale up its third-party cargo business. The project strengthens the company's position in India's port privatisation and PPP ecosystem, with JSW Infrastructure being the second largest commercial port operator in India in terms of cargo handling capacity. The development is underpinned by strong demand fundamentals, benefiting from a well-established hinterland and a high concentration of cargo originating from the Kolkata metropolitan region.
The announcement comes weeks after the Sajjan Jindal-led company reported strong fourth-quarter results, with revenue rising 18.6% to ₹1,522.34 crore and EBITDA increasing nearly 20% to ₹768.8 crore. However, as reported by Business Standard, the company's consolidated net profit fell 17.82% to ₹423.67 crore in Q4 FY26 over Q4 FY25. Cargo volumes handled during the quarter stood at 31.6 million tonnes, supported by higher throughput across several ports and contributions from newly operational terminals. The company's recent financial performance demonstrates robust operational metrics that support its expansion strategy in the port infrastructure sector.
