Swiggy shares gained nearly 5% in Thursday's trading session, reaching an intraday high of ₹283 on the NSE following the announcement of its quick commerce arm Instamart's partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) for on-demand LPG cylinder delivery. As per Business Standard, the stock rose as much as 4.81% to the intraday high, with shares trading at ₹277, up 2.89% from the previous close at around 12:33 PM. The benchmark Nifty 50 was up 64 points, or 0.29%, at 24,145 during the same period. Ponmudi R, founder & CEO at Enrich Money, noted that the market is rewarding Swiggy for expanding beyond grocery and food delivery into high-frequency essential services, stating that the HPCL partnership is strategically important because it broadens Instamart's addressable market and increases customer engagement without requiring Swiggy to build a new distribution network from scratch.
Swiggy Instamart has partnered with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to launch India's first 10-minute on-demand liquified petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder delivery service on a quick-commerce platform. According to the official release, the launch marks the commercial rollout of HPCL's HP Navya, a next-generation 10-kg composite LPG cylinder designed for enhanced accessibility and safety. The service will initially go live in Bengaluru, allowing consumers to order HP Navya, a next-generation composite LPG cylinder designed for modern households. Speaking on the launch, Amitesh Jha, CEO of Instamart, emphasized that the platform has expanded its consumption use cases well beyond groceries to become part of everyday life, with the HPCL partnership extending convenience to an essential household service while maintaining safety and reliability standards.
The service eliminates the traditional requirement for existing domestic LPG connections, making it accessible to students, working professionals and smaller households that may not have formal gas connections. As reported by the official release, consumers do not require an existing domestic LPG connection to place an order. First-time purchases will be treated as new cylinder purchases, while subsequent orders will function as refill requests, with customers required to return the empty HPCL cylinder during delivery. Orders placed through Instamart will be fulfilled by HPCL's authorised distributor network and delivered by trained personnel following applicable safety and regulatory protocols. The platform will also offer HPCL's 5 kg metal LPG cylinder alongside the HP Navya composite cylinder, with first-time customers required to complete identity verification as part of the ordering process. Customers can log into the Instamart app, choose either the 10 kg HP Navya composite LPG cylinder or the 5 kg metal LPG cylinder, add it to their cart and place an order for immediate delivery.
The HP Navya cylinder features significant technical improvements over conventional steel cylinders, including lighter weight and enhanced corrosion resistance. According to HPCL, the cylinder includes a translucent body that enables consumers to monitor gas levels easily, while its compact design is intended for apartments, small families and households seeking convenient secondary LPG cylinders. The cylinder has been positioned by HPCL as a lighter and corrosion-resistant alternative to conventional steel cylinders, with its translucent body specifically designed for easy gas level monitoring. The cylinder has been positioned by HPCL as a lighter and corrosion-resistant alternative to conventional steel cylinders, with its compact design specifically aimed at apartments, small families, students and working professionals seeking an additional cooking gas option.
For Instamart, which offers more than 50,000 stock-keeping units across over 131 cities, the partnership marks its entry into high-trust utility categories. As reported by the official release, the launch represents Instamart's expansion into what the company describes as a 'high-trust' category, with the platform currently delivering more than 50,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) to consumers. Santosh Meena, head of research at Swastika Investmart, noted that the pilot is innovative (India's first QC LPG delivery) but modest in immediate scale, more about strategic momentum than transformation. However, he added that the outlook remains positive on Swiggy, with the food delivery arm being profitable and Instamart scaling with innovations, expecting continued revenue growth and narrowing losses if execution holds. Ponmudi R from Enrich Money noted that margins on LPG deliveries may not be very high initially, but the increase in customer lifetime value and cross-selling opportunities could improve operating leverage over time.
