IIFL Finance shares experienced a sharp rally following the resolution of a significant regulatory overhang. According to reports from Business Standard, the company received a ₹476 crore income tax demand notice but has strong legal grounds to contest the demand. The lender had previously received a January notice from the Income Tax Department directing a special audit, which the company characterized as a procedural step in its ongoing income tax assessment for a multi-year block period.
Despite the tax demand, IIFL Finance reported robust financial results for Q4 FY26. As reported by Business Standard, the company achieved a 148% year-on-year surge in profit after tax to ₹623.2 crore for the March quarter, compared with ₹251.4 crore in the year-ago period. The strong performance was driven by loan assets under management (AUM) rising 38% YoY to ₹1.08 trillion as of March 31, 2026.
Nirmal Jain, founder and managing director of IIFL Finance, expressed confidence in the company's position regarding the tax demand. According to Business Standard, Jain stated that the company has strong factual and legal grounds to contest the demand and will pursue appropriate remedies under the law. He emphasized that the company has always conducted its affairs in full compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations, with business fundamentals, liquidity position, and growth outlook remaining strong.
The removal of the major regulatory overhang likely drove the sharp rally in IIFL Finance shares, despite broader market weakness. As reported by Business Standard, Jain highlighted that the income tax demand effectively concludes the assessment proceedings against the lender. He noted that India's macroeconomic fundamentals continue to remain strong, supported by domestic consumption, stable financial markets, and healthy credit demand, expressing confidence about the growth outlook despite monitoring global geopolitical developments.
