
Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), India's largest compressed natural gas distribution company, is actively exploring the acquisition of stakes in existing city gas distribution companies, as announced by Chairman Subhankar Sen during the company's 27th Annual General Meeting. According to reports from Business Standard, this strategic move represents IGL's commitment to expanding its market presence in the city gas distribution sector.
The company has signed a joint venture agreement with Rajasthan Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (RVUNL) for establishing a greenfield solar power plant with 500 MW capacity in Rajasthan. As reported by Business Standard, IGL has also floated a tender for setting up a 200 MW solar plant in the state. The renewable energy initiative aims to replace conventional grid power and reduce the carbon intensity of the energy mix.
As part of backward integration strategy, IGL has established IGL Genesis Technologies Ltd, a joint venture company for meter manufacturing. According to the company announcement, commercial production of meters has recently commenced, marking a significant milestone in the company's vertical integration efforts. This development supports the company's goal of reducing dependence on external suppliers for critical equipment.
Despite global energy sector challenges, IGL demonstrated strong operational growth by establishing 70 new CNG stations in 2025-26, bringing its total CNG station count to 1,024. As reported by Business Standard, the company also added over 3.70 lakh new piped natural gas (PNG) domestic connections during the same period. IGL's network spans across 32,000 km of pipelines and serves over 2.1 million CNG vehicles through more than 1,000 CNG stations.
IGL operates city gas distribution infrastructure across 14 cities including Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Rewari, Gurugram, Karnal, Kaithal, Fatehpur, Ajmer, Pali, Rajsamand, Hamirpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Banda and parts of Kanpur and Meerut. According to the company data, IGL has connected over three million households in these cities with PNG, demonstrating its significant market penetration and contribution to India's energy infrastructure development.
