The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will establish an advanced forensic auditing lab in Hyderabad to support smaller chartered accountant firms. According to reports from PTI, ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D announced that the institute will launch this facility within 2-3 months at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Hyderabad. The lab will operate on a 'pay and use model' and provide assignment-specific tools to help small and medium practitioners build capabilities in emerging audit technologies. As reported by Rediff Money, this initiative addresses the growing need for AI, data analytics, ESG, and forensic auditing capabilities in the evolving accountancy profession.
As reported by PTI, forensic audit represents a new area where small and medium chartered accountant firms currently lack participation capabilities. The institute serves more than five lakh members, including these smaller practitioners who face challenges in competing for large auditing assignments due to their limited forensic audit capabilities. The advanced forensic lab is specifically designed to address this capability gap and enable these firms to participate more effectively in the evolving audit landscape, with lakhs of students pursuing the chartered accountant programme at ICAI. According to Rediff Money, this development comes as the accountancy profession has witnessed a major transformation with increasing focus on non-financial reporting, ESG disclosures, AI, data analytics, and forensic auditing.
According to the report, this development aligns with larger government efforts to create homegrown accounting firms that can compete at global scales. In February 2026, ICAI notified global networking guidelines that paved the way for creating large domestic chartered accountant firms capable of collaborating with global networks. These initiatives aim to create more opportunities in India's growing economy while maintaining domestic expertise, with the goal of having homegrown big accounting firms that can help create more opportunities in the country's growing economy and compete at the scale of global players.
As reported by PTI, ICAI is preparing to embed artificial intelligence, data analytics, and other subjects in its curriculum to keep pace with technological and professional changes. The institute has recently formed the Committee for Review of Education and Training (CRET), which is expected to finalize recommendations including curriculum updates in the coming months. The CRET will focus on integrating emerging technological and professional aspects into the CA curriculum, addressing the transformation in accountancy with increasing focus on non-financial reporting, ESG disclosures, AI, and forensic auditing. This comprehensive approach ensures that ICAI's curriculum remains relevant to the evolving professional landscape and prepares students for the demands of modern accounting practice.
