Hindustan Unilever Limited inaugurated India's first Unilever Fragrance Hub (UFH) at the IIT Bombay campus in Mumbai on Tuesday, making India the third country after the UK and the United States to host such a facility under Unilever's global fragrance innovation programme. According to Business Standard, this facility reinforces India's role as a key growth market and R&D hub within the global Unilever network, with the company positioning it as part of its premiumisation strategy. Vivek Sirohi, Head of the Unilever Fragrance House, highlighted India as one of Unilever's most important growth markets and a vital engine for global innovation, stating that the hub enables faster local response, deeper market understanding, and improved self-reliance in application and evaluation, allowing for better design of fragrances tailored to product and consumer contexts.
The Mumbai facility combines proprietary creation software, real-time evaluation data capture, and advanced compounding technologies, enabling end-to-end fragrance design, testing, and refinement. As reported by Business Standard, this colocation at IIT Bombay is intended to foster academic collaboration, particularly in science, technology, and data-driven fragrance innovation. Vibhav Sanzgiri, Executive Director, R&D, Hindustan Unilever Limited, described the India lab as a fully integrated facility for fragrance creation, application, and evaluation that combines consumer insight, advanced science, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to expedite innovation, improve product experiences, and support premiumization across various categories. The hub strategically leverages IIT Bombay's research capabilities and creates opportunities for collaboration with academia in areas of science and technology, data and digital-first fragrance innovation.
The India facility represents the third global hub in Unilever's network, following establishments in the UK and US. This latest investment is part of Unilever's €100 million programme to advance in-house, digitally enabled fragrance creation capabilities across the global operations. According to Business Standard, the facility combines consumer insight, advanced science and AI to accelerate innovation, enhance product experience, and support premiumisation across categories. The establishment of the UFH underscores Unilever's strong commitment to India as both a priority market and a global center of excellence, with the hub designed to leverage consumer insights, advanced science, and AI to accelerate fragrance innovation and enhance product desirability across HUL's diverse portfolio.
Vivek Sirohi, Head of the Unilever Fragrance House, stated that India is a critical engine of innovation for the company's global business, with the hub enabling fragrances designed from local consumer insights to scale globally. As reported by Business Standard, fragrance plays a critical role in elevating the consumer experience and performance of everyday products from shampoos and body washes to deodorants and laundry detergents. The India lab is designed to use India's consumption base to offer diverse insights and design fragrances that can scale globally and drive growth. This investment reinforces India's position as a critical market for Unilever's global innovation strategy, leveraging the country's research capabilities and consumer insights for international product development, with fragrance identified as an increasingly important driver of brand preference and product desirability.
