According to reports from CNBC TV18, Business Standard, and The Hindu BusinessLine, Hindustan Zinc Ltd announced on Monday, June 22, that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Advantek Associates LLP and Aero Eagle Automobiles Pvt Ltd to explore the adoption of green hydrogen and other clean energy solutions across its operations. The collaboration aims to evaluate innovative technologies that can support the transition towards low-carbon and future-ready mining operations. As per the latest regulatory filing, the partnership will focus on conducting comprehensive feasibility assessments for hydrogen-based technologies, including green hydrogen generation, storage, dispensing infrastructure, and hydrogen-powered equipment. Arun Misra, Chief Executive Officer of Hindustan Zinc Limited, emphasized the company's commitment to introducing innovative technologies that can reshape the future of sustainable mining, noting that hydrogen has the potential to significantly reduce emissions from heavy-duty equipment while creating new opportunities for decarbonising industrial operations that are difficult to electrify. Commenting on the development, Misra stated that "At Hindustan Zinc, we are focused on pioneering solutions that can redefine the future of sustainable mining. Hydrogen has the potential to support cleaner mobility, reduce emissions from heavy-duty equipment, and create new pathways for decarbonising hard-to-abate industrial operations."
As reported by CNBC TV18, the assessment will examine the use of hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2-ICE) and fuel cell technologies in mining and industrial operations. A key area of exploration will be the use of hydrogen fuel solutions in underground mining environments. The three partners will undertake comprehensive feasibility studies covering green hydrogen production, storage, refuelling infrastructure and the integration of hydrogen-powered equipment into mining operations. The proposed solutions will be evaluated for deployment across underground mining equipment, heavy earth-moving machinery, surface transportation vehicles, power generators and other critical operational assets. The initiative will follow a phased approach, beginning with technical, operational, safety, environmental and financial feasibility studies before advancing to pilot projects and phased implementation, subject to successful outcomes. Based on the outcomes, the collaboration may be scaled further to enable broader deployment across mining equipment, heavy earth-moving machinery, underground and surface vehicles, generators, and other operational assets.
Through the MoU, the Vedanta Group firm is set to pioneer the use of hydrogen fuel for underground mining applications, positioning it to become the only company to deploy this technology in such environments. The collaboration positions Hindustan Zinc among the first companies in India's mining industry to assess the deployment of hydrogen fuel technologies in underground mining environments. As per the latest regulatory filing, this positions Hindustan Zinc among the early movers in India's mining sector to assess such applications. The partnership is expected to play a pivotal role in building internal capabilities for next-generation fuels and accelerating the adoption of sustainable energy solutions within the metals and mining sector, complementing the company's broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy which prioritises energy transition, resource efficiency and responsible mining practices. The initiative is aligned with Hindustan Zinc's broader Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) roadmap, which prioritises decarbonisation, energy transition, and responsible natural resource management.
As reported by CNBC TV18, Business Standard, and The Hindu BusinessLine, the move forms part of Hindustan Zinc's strategy to develop low-carbon mining operations and aligns with its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier. The collaboration is part of Hindustan Zinc's larger strategy to build future-ready, low carbon and technology-led mining operations, aligned with its commitment to become Net Zero by 2050 or sooner. As mining and heavy industry continue to be among the most difficult sectors to decarbonise, clean fuel technologies such as hydrogen are emerging as important pathways for reducing emissions in high-capacity, energy-intensive and hard-to-electrify applications. The company has already increased the share of renewable energy in its power mix to nearly 18% while continuing to improve operational efficiency through cleaner technologies. The partnership forms part of the company's long-term strategy to develop technology-driven, low-carbon mining operations while advancing its commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
