Hindustan Copper shares gained 3% to reach the day's high of ₹521.75 on the BSE on Tuesday, following the company's announcement of a ₹7,000 crore capital investment plan over the next 5-6 years. According to The Economic Times, this represents an expansion of the company's earlier ₹7,190 crore program announced in April 2026. The gains marked a rebound after a brief pullback in recent months, with the rally supported by concerns over potential US tariffs on refined copper imports.
The company has signed multiple MoUs with leading Indian PSUs including NTPC Mining (NML), RITES, IOCL, Coal India, Oil India, and GAIL to expand its mining portfolio and strengthen India's mineral security. As reported by The Economic Times, Hindustan Copper has also entered a global partnership with CODELCO, Chile for capacity building, knowledge sharing, and expertise in mining, beneficiation, and exploration. The company has added 154.14 million tonnes of copper ore reserves/resources in the last 4 years and is pursuing new copper deposits in India and overseas.
According to reports from Equitymaster.com, Hindustan Copper unveiled its Vision 2030 corporate plan at its annual plan meeting on 17-18 April 2026, targeting a near-tripling of ore production from 3.67 million tonnes mined in FY26 to 12.20 million tonnes annually by FY30. The expansion strategy involves four distinct projects at different stages of development. Malanjkhand represents the largest component, transitioning from 2.5 MTPA to 5.0 MTPA capacity through underground mining beneath exhausted open-cast reserves. The Ghatshila complex in Jharkhand operates under a mine developer cum operator model with JSW, targeting 3 million tonnes capacity, while the Gujarat Copper Project is expected to begin production from the fourth quarter of FY27.
As reported by Equitymaster.com, Hindustan Copper achieved remarkable financial performance in the June 2026 quarter, earning ₹353 crore compared to the company's ₹589 crore profit target for FY26. When annualized, this quarterly performance represents approximately ₹1,410 crore, which is about 90% of the FY30 target achieved four years early. The company's revenue rose 81% and profit increased 163%, while the operating EBITDA margin expanded more than 13 percentage points to 54.2%. The company has also indicated plans to raise ₹500 crore through non-convertible debentures and a qualified institutional placement.
According to Equitymaster.com, Hindustan Copper's management estimates that every $100 increase in copper prices is worth approximately ₹20-25 crore in additional profit. With copper prices reaching a record $14,617 per tonne this year, up from under $1,000 at the end of November 2025, the company faces significant downside risk. A copper price reversion from current levels to $10,000 would remove ₹920-1,150 crore of annual profit, potentially consuming most of the earnings improvement from the entire expansion program. Recent market developments show benchmark three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange up 0.61% at $14,750.5 per metric ton, rising for a sixth straight session, supported by concerns over potential US tariffs on refined copper imports.
