
Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) has secured environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for its Lakhpat–Punrajpur Lignite and Limestone Mine in Kutch, Gujarat. According to reports from CNBC TV18 and ETEnergyworld, this regulatory milestone represents a significant step forward for the company's expansion plans in the region. The approval enables the company to advance towards project implementation in line with statutory requirements.
The approved project carries a production capacity of 3.0 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of lignite and 29.81 MTPA of limestone. As reported by CNBC TV18 and ETEnergyworld, GMDC stated that the clearance marks a key regulatory milestone and enhances long-term production visibility, strengthening its mineral resource base within Gujarat across both fuel and industrial mineral segments. The integrated development of lignite and limestone resources is expected to support sectors such as energy generation, cement and other mineral-based industries, forming part of GMDC's expansion strategy aimed at strengthening its reserve base, diversifying mineral streams and ensuring sustainable operational growth.
Separately, GMDC signed a memorandum of understanding with NTPC Limited on February 26 to explore opportunities in coal and lignite gasification and downstream utilisation. According to CNBC TV18, the framework includes feasibility assessment, pilot projects, exploration of end-use applications and a time-bound action plan. This partnership aligns with the company's strategic focus on expanding its operational capabilities and leveraging integrated lignite and limestone resources for diversified applications.
Earlier this month, GMDC reported net profit of ₹133 crore for Q3 FY26, representing a 10% year-on-year decline. As reported by CNBC TV18, revenue declined 11.3% to ₹579 crore during the quarter. However, EBITDA showed positive momentum with a 9.5% increase to ₹101.2 crore, while margins improved to 17.5% from 14.1% a year ago.
