The specialty chemicals maker delivered a consolidated net profit of ₹165.9 crore in Q1 FY27, representing an 108.7% increase from ₹79.5 crore in the year-ago period and ₹62.4 crore in Q4 FY26. Managing Director K Natarajan raised the full-year profitability guidance after the bottom line more than doubled, with the company now expecting an EBITDA of ₹24,000-25,000 per tonne, compared to ₹19,000-21,000 earlier. The latest earnings season reveals a tale of two markets, with industrial and chemical stocks like Galaxy Surfactants thriving on margin expansion, while auto and construction players face headwinds. As per Business Standard, the stock has gained 23% so far this year compared to an 8.61% decline in the Sensex, with a 35% zoom in three months versus Sensex's 3% gain during the same period.
The Navi Mumbai-based specialty chemicals maker achieved its highest-ever quarterly EBITDA of ₹252.5 crore, up 86.9% year-on-year from ₹123 crore and rising 107.1% sequentially. Operating profit margin expanded to 13.97% during the quarter, compared to 9.62% in Q1 FY26 and 9.3% in Q4 FY26. EBITDA per metric tonne jumped to approximately ₹35,458 per MT, compared to ₹20,009 per MT in the same period last year. Revenue from operations rose 38.5% year-on-year to ₹1,785.2 crore, with the company posting the best-ever quarterly earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). EBIT increased 104.7% YoY and 144.2% QoQ to ₹216.5 crore, while profit before tax surged 108.9% YoY and 158.4% QoQ to ₹207.2 crore. Management attributed the overall quarterly gains to a better product mix, higher contributions from specialty care products, disciplined pricing actions, and demand recovery among Tier-1 FMCG clients. Despite sharp feedstock price fluctuations and supply-chain disruptions linked to developments in West Asia, the company leveraged its diversified product portfolio, agile supply chain, strong vendor relationships, and operational excellence to deliver record quarterly profitability.
While sales volumes in Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey declined during the quarter due to geopolitical developments in West Asia, Galaxy Surfactants managed to grow sales in India, achieving mid-single-digit year-on-year volume growth and returning to double-digit growth. The India region returned to double-digit volume growth, with the Rest of the World (RoW) segment maintaining mid-single-digit volume expansion. By product vertical, performance surfactants generated ₹1,178.7 crore in revenue, while speciality care contributed ₹603.2 crore, with both segments recording mid-single-digit volume growth year-on-year. Despite supply chain headwinds and geopolitical developments, volumes in the AMET market declined only in low single digits year-on-year and staged a strong sequential recovery. The Specialty Care business sustained momentum across international markets, with recovery in demand from Tier-1 customers supporting the quarter's performance. The manufacturer of performance surfactants and specialty care products reported a strong recovery in the AMET region, with the company expressing encouragement about the recovery in customer demand, strong momentum in Specialty Care and continued strength of its India business.
Despite facing rising input costs, Galaxy Surfactants delivered significant margin expansion through favorable product mix, operating leverage, and pricing actions. As reported by Business Standard, average fatty alcohol prices increased to $2,806 per tonne during the quarter, compared with $2,751 per tonne in Q4 FY26 and $2,723 per tonne in Q1 FY26. Total expenses increased 32.61% YoY to ₹1,577.95 crore, with cost of materials consumed rising 39.37% YoY to ₹1,291.60 crore. Employee benefits expense increased 19.34% YoY to ₹100.14 crore, while finance costs rose 41.68% YoY to ₹9.28 crore. The company continues to target 6-8% volume growth for FY27, supported by healthy demand in India and gradual recovery across international markets. The cyclical nature of the chemical sector raises questions about the sustainability of Galaxy Surfactants' profit surge, with investors watching for continued margin expansion trends.
According to Sudeep Shah from SBI Securities, Galaxy Surfactants share price has given a breakout from a downward-sloping trendline on the weekly chart, signalling a potential trend reversal. The RSI has broken above the 60 mark for the first time, indicating strengthening bullish momentum, while the MACD line has crossed above the zero line. Shah notes that the ₹2,400-₹2,380 zone is likely to act as immediate support, with any breach below this zone potentially triggering a downside move. However, as long as the stock sustains above this support zone, the pullback is likely to extend further on the upside. Looking ahead, management expressed confidence in its long-term growth trajectory, with strong demand in India and recovery in core client segments expected to support growth through FY27. The company remains watchful of geopolitical developments and their impact on global supply chains, while remaining encouraged by the recovery in customer demand, momentum in Specialty Care and continued strength in its India business. Galaxy Surfactants shares have demonstrated strong performance with a 23% jump from the beginning of the year, 28% gain over a month, and 33% climb over six months, reflecting investor confidence in the company's operational excellence and market position.
