According to reports from The Hindu BusinessLine, Emcure Pharmaceuticals has announced a significant price reduction for its weight management drug Poviztra, a semaglutide injection. The starting dose of Poviztra will now be priced at ₹3,999 per month, representing a 55% reduction from the previous price. The revised rates will come into effect from 3 April 2026. This latest reduction follows earlier announcements where the company had initially reduced prices by 47%.
As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, the company has reduced monthly prices across all dosage strengths of Poviztra. The 0.25 mg dose is now priced at ₹3,999 (reduced from ₹8,790), while the 0.5 mg dose is available at ₹4,999 (down from ₹11,200). The 1 mg dose is priced at ₹5,999 (reduced from ₹11,200), and the 1.7 mg dose is available at ₹7,999 (down from ₹13,000). The 2.4 mg dose is now priced at ₹8,999 (reduced from ₹15,000). The innovator's semaglutide is available in a once-weekly pen device in five strengths of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg and a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg.
According to The Hindu BusinessLine, the announcement comes just weeks after semaglutide, the molecule behind Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk's blockbuster weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, lost its patent protection in India. This triggered a wave of launches by domestic pharmaceutical companies, which released cheaper copies or generics, leading to a rush of competition that resulted in prices being cut by more than half. The generics have priced their products between 50 to 80% lower than the innovator price, creating intense market competition. The move comes a day after Novo Nordisk slashed prices on its Wegovy and Ozempic, both containing semaglutide.
As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, Emcure has a partnership with Novo Nordisk and sells its second brand of obesity drug Wegovy, under its own brandname. As the first Indian company to exclusively distribute and commercialise Poviztra, a second brand of Novo Nordisk's semaglutide injection for obesity, Emcure aims to expand access and enable more patients to benefit from this proven therapy at the revised price. Satish Mehta, Emcure Pharma Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, stated that the revised pricing of Poviztra is a step towards making scientifically validated weight-management therapies more accessible and affordable to a wider patient base.
According to The Hindu BusinessLine, India is grappling with a growing obesity epidemic, with nearly 254 million people living with generalised obesity and 351 million living with abdominal obesity. Mehta emphasized that improving access to a globally established molecule like semaglutide is crucial to addressing this public health challenge at scale. The company stated that the price revision will bring the innovator molecule within reach of a significantly larger patient base across the country, addressing obesity and weight-related health conditions as one of India's most pressing public health challenges.
