Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd. shares fell as much as 1% to ₹1,895.7 in early trade on Friday following the company's announcement of a significant leadership change. According to the latest exchange filing, Prabha Narasimhan will step down as managing director and CEO at the close of business on September 27, 2026, following her promotion to executive vice president, marketing, Asia-Pacific division, of Colgate-Palmolive. This represents a year prior to the end of her tenure, marking an unexpected acceleration in the leadership transition timeline. The stock has declined in nine of the last 10 trading sessions and is down nearly 7% over the same period, with the company's shares having corrected 51% from their record high levels of ₹3,893 reached in October 2024. The leadership change was decided at a 45-minute board meeting early on Friday, 21 August, with Narasimhan tendering her resignation on the same day.
The company's board has appointed Manish Anandani as her successor for a five-year term from September 28, 2026, subject to shareholder and other statutory approvals, as reported in the latest exchange filing. Anandani joins Colgate-Palmolive India from Kenvue, where he was managing director for India and South Asia. He brings 30 years of experience across sales, marketing, general management and senior leadership roles, with previous experience at Colgate-Palmolive joining in 2005 as a regional manager before leaving in 2018. His last role at the company was worldwide director in the Global Customer Development function, where he worked on retail marketing and shopper development capabilities. This appointment represents a return to Colgate for Anandani, as he previously held several roles across India, Indochina and the corporate office before his departure. Anandani has extensive background in enterprise strategy, digital and eCommerce transformation, and market expansion, with his career spanning multiple roles including Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Philippines and Vice President of Sales & Professional Marketing for India. Anandani holds a degree in Electronics and an MBA in Marketing, along with an Executive MBA in Leadership from the Tuck School of Business in the USA.
According to the latest exchange filing, Narasimhan's resignation follows her promotion to the Asia-Pacific marketing role at Colgate-Palmolive. In her resignation letter, she stated "I hereby resign from the position of Managing Director & CEO of Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited" with effect from the close of business on September 27, 2026. She will also cease to be a director and member of the Stakeholders' Relationship Committee, ESG & Corporate Social Responsibility Committee and Risk Management Committee from the same date. During her four-year tenure at the helm of Colgate-Palmolive India, she steered the company through a transformative growth journey, reinforcing its position as the market leader in oral care. As per the company's press statement, under her leadership, the company doubled down on strategic premiumization, accelerating premium portfolio growth to five times the pace of the broader market, while delivering volume-led growth, industry-leading profitability, and consistent top-line momentum. Narasimhan had assumed charge as the MD & CEO of Colgate-Palmolive India back on September 1, 2022, and during her tenure, shares of Colgate-Palmolive India have gained 14% during the last four years. Narasimhan will continue with the company in her new role as Executive Vice President – Marketing, Asia Pacific, maintaining her connection with the organization while transitioning to a global role within the Colgate-Palmolive organization.
The leadership change comes as Colgate-Palmolive India bets on premiumisation as a driver of growth in the country, with the company's strategy aligning with India's consumer industry increasingly moving toward e-commerce as a primary channel. According to Reuters, the Indian unit of the U.S.-based consumer major is positioning itself to capitalize on these trends through its new leadership team. Anandani brings particular expertise in e-commerce and retail strategy, having spent nearly 13 years at Colgate-Palmolive before his four-year stint at Kenvue, which was spun off from Johnson & Johnson's consumer business and listed in 2023. This strategic focus on digital transformation and premium product positioning is expected to drive the company's growth trajectory in the evolving Indian consumer market. The leadership change comes days after Narasimhan acknowledged a key weak spot in the company's portfolio, as she said in her last address to analysts on August 17 that she was disappointed with the performance of the Palmolive brand. "I must confess that this has been an area of disappointment. We've not done a great job with Palmolive," Narasimhan stated, adding that the company had "not done a great job with Palmolive."
Shares of the company were trading down 19% from a year ago on the National Stock Exchange on Friday morning, compared with a 3% decline in the benchmark Nifty 50 over the same period. According to Mint, analysts at Nuvama said the "overhang goes away" for Colgate India following the appointment of the new chief executive. They added that Anandani has the required experience in sales, marketing and eCommerce and has served as MD of a company for five years. The analysts also said the change does not represent an abrupt transition and is a well-planned one. The leadership change comes after more startups emerged in the oral care segment like RPSG Capital Ventures and Sauce VC backed Perfora and Lotus Holdings backed Salt following the pandemic. The company had previously introduced the ayurvedic product Ved Shakti to tap into this market, without much success, with global management accepting it as a wrong bet. Since then, Colgate has doubled down on its science-led innovation to help the company remain differentiated among emerging competitors.
