Mastercard Asia/Pacific Pte Ltd has completed a significant divestment by selling its entire 4.31% stake in fintech firm Pine Labs for ₹934 crore through block deals on the BSE. According to CNBC TV18, the transaction involved 4.97 crore shares sold in 13 tranches at an average price of ₹188 per share. The stake was acquired by a consortium of mutual funds managed by Kotak Mahindra, Edelweiss and Franklin Templeton, along with ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company.
The divestment attracted significant foreign institutional interest, with major global investors participating in the transaction. As reported by CNBC TV18, foreign investors including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup Global Markets Singapore, BNP Paribas Arbitrage, Ghisallo Capital Management, Rams Equities Portfolio Fund, Societe Generale, Susquehanna International Group and NRSGVCC acquired shares from Mastercard. This represents a substantial international investor confidence in Pine Labs' growth prospects.
The market responded negatively to the transaction news, with Pine Labs shares falling more than 3% in intraday trade on Thursday, extending losses for a second consecutive session. According to CNBC TV18, this decline followed the block deal on Tuesday, September 22, which saw the stake change hands at the average price of ₹188 per share. The share-price movement is separate from Thursday's soundbox announcement, indicating investor concerns about the major stake sale despite positive business developments.
Despite the stake sale, Pine Labs announced ambitious expansion plans on Thursday, September 24, revealing plans to deploy 10 lakh soundboxes across India to power digital commerce. As reported by CNBC TV18, CEO B Amrish Rau explained that the company wanted to invest back into the payments ecosystem as new monetisation opportunities emerge. The soundboxes use a cloud-first architecture and provide merchants with audio confirmation of transactions, along with remote management, over-the-air software updates and centralised monitoring capabilities.
The infrastructure expansion comes as India's digital payments sector continues to show strong growth momentum. According to CNBC TV18, UPI processed 22.35 billion transactions worth ₹29.03 lakh crore in April 2026, with 713 banks live on the platform. The International Monetary Fund has identified UPI as the world's largest retail fast payment system by transaction volume. IBEF reports that India's digital sector is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2030, supported by rising incomes and increasing internet and smartphone penetration.
