The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved US-based General Atlantic's proposal to acquire an additional stake in insurtech firm Acko Technology & Services Pvt Ltd. According to the latest reports from Upstox News Desk, the private equity firm is acquiring additional shares through its affiliate General Atlantic Singapore ACK Pte Ltd. The proposed combination involves the acquisition of additional shareholding of Acko Technology & Services Pvt Ltd by General Atlantic Singapore ACK Pte Ltd on a fully diluted basis, crossing the threshold of 25% pursuant to Acko Tech's rights issue. As per the regulator's official statement, General Atlantic Singapore ACK Pte Ltd is an investment holding company incorporated in Singapore and is affiliated with General Atlantic investment funds, which provide capital and strategic support to growing businesses across sectors including technology, healthcare and life sciences, infrastructure and real estate, financial services, consumer businesses, and climate and sustainable infrastructure.
As reported by Upstox News Desk, the transaction follows a rights issue by the insurtech company and covers its insurance and distribution businesses. General Atlantic provides capital and strategic support to growing businesses across several global sectors, including technology, healthcare, life sciences, infrastructure, and financial services. The acquisition will increase General Atlantic's total shareholding in Acko Tech beyond the regulatory threshold of 25%. The CCI approval enables General Atlantic to increase its shareholding in the company through the proposed Rights Issue, with the regulator confirming that the approval covers the acquisition of additional shareholding of Acko Technology & Services Private Limited by General Atlantic Singapore ACK Pte Ltd, crossing the 25% threshold.
According to Upstox News Desk, Acko Technology & Services has three wholly owned subsidiaries — Assurelink, Acko General Insurance and Acko Life Insurance. Acko General Insurance and Acko Life are licensed general (non-life) and life insurance providers, respectively, while Assurelink is awaiting an IRDAI corporate agency Licence to undertake insurance policy distribution in India. The subsidiary structure provides General Atlantic with exposure across multiple segments of the insurance value chain. As per the latest reports, Acko Technology & Services also holds investments in other entities, expanding its presence across India's insurance market.
As reported by Upstox News Desk, deals beyond a certain threshold require approval from the regulator, which keeps a watch on unfair business practices as well as promotes fair competition in the marketplace. The CCI approval ensures compliance with competition regulations for the increased stake acquisition in the insurtech company. The regulator specifically noted that deals beyond a certain threshold mandatorily require approval from CCI, with the latest approval covering the acquisition of additional shareholding of Acko Technology & Services Private Limited by General Atlantic Singapore ACK Pte Ltd, crossing the 25% threshold. The transaction represents General Atlantic's continued investment in the Indian insurance technology sector through its Singapore affiliate structure.
