State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Vodafone Idea are in discussions to explore infrastructure sharing arrangements, as the state-run telecom operator looks to strengthen its network capabilities. According to sources reported by CNBC-TV18, the two telecom operators have already initiated intra-circle roaming (ICR) arrangements in 12-13 telecom circles, allowing one operator's subscribers to access another operator's network in areas where coverage may be limited. The discussions have now expanded beyond ICR to include network-sharing arrangements between the two operators, as confirmed by sources to CNBC-TV18.
The Department of Telecommunications is not pushing BSNL towards any specific partnership or arrangement with Vodafone Idea, sources told CNBC-TV18. BSNL has been given strategic flexibility to independently assess and decide on the nature of its partnership, including the possibility of sharing network infrastructure with the private telecom operator. The discussions on infrastructure sharing could further support BSNL's efforts to expand network reach and improve connectivity, while potentially allowing both operators to make more efficient use of existing telecom infrastructure. However, the contours and scope of any broader infrastructure-sharing partnership are still being explored.
Shares of Vodafone Idea were trading 2% lower at ₹12.6 apiece at 2:20 pm on Friday, as reported by CNBC-TV18. The stock has declined 4.4% in the past month and is up 11.8% in the last six months. The contours and scope of any broader infrastructure-sharing partnership between the two operators are still being explored, with the discussions representing a significant development in India's telecom sector consolidation efforts.
