Bharat Dynamics shares gained 2% to ₹1,181.50 on Thursday following the Ministry of Defence's award of an ₹810.79 crore contract for 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) along with associated equipment for the Indian Air Force. The gains occurred despite a weak market as Sensex and Nifty declined up to 1%, demonstrating strong investor confidence in the defence sector's growth prospects. The stock performance reflects positive sentiment towards India's push towards indigenous defence manufacturing and the company's enhanced order visibility amid rising defence spending. As per Business Standard, nearly 1.1 million shares changed hands on BSE and NSE combined, with the stock trading at ₹1,174.70 as of 11:05 AM, showing resilience against broader market weakness.
Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) has secured a significant ₹810.79 crore contract with the Ministry of Defence for 160 indigenous Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) for the Indian Air Force. The contract was signed in New Delhi on September 23, 2026 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, falling under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category. The SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb designed to be launched from platforms including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30 MKI, capable of engaging enemy airfields from long stand-off range. As per the latest Press Information Bureau (PIB) report, the delivery of SAT-SAAW is scheduled between 2027-2028 and 2028-2029.
The SAT-SAAW demonstrates advanced technical specifications with accuracy of less than 7 metres when using its indigenous GPS-based navigation system and less than 3 metres when guided by its seeker. According to BDL, the weapon system has a range of up to 90-100 km, depending on release conditions, and can be deployed without flying directly over or close to target areas. This stand-off capability significantly reduces exposure of launch aircraft to enemy air-defence systems while maintaining high-precision strikes against reinforced ground targets such as enemy runways, bunkers, radars and hangars.
The weapon system, designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will feature 60% indigenous content with the programme involving indigenisation of key sub-systems including the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier. As reported by Business Standard, the Defence Ministry stated that the induction will strengthen the operational capabilities of the IAF and bolster the country's defence preparedness. The indigenous design approach will further boost Aatmanirbharta in defence manufacturing, with the system designed to deliver high-precision strikes from safe distances.
Domestic brokerage Emkay Global initiated coverage on Bharat Dynamics with an 'Add' rating and set a target price of ₹1,350 on the stock. However, the brokerage noted that increasing competition and higher R&D expenditure are expected to put pressure on margins in the near term. Technical analyst Harish Jujarey from Prithvi Finmart observed that BDL stock has remained under pressure over the past few weeks, declining close to its March low of ₹1,095, but has shown gradual recovery. He noted that as long as the support at ₹1,085 holds, the current recovery may extend towards the 50-DMA at ₹1,265, followed by the 200-DMA at ₹1,320 levels. The sharp decline has pushed the RSI into oversold territory, indicating the possibility of further recovery in the near term.
Despite the latest contract win, Bharat Dynamics' stock has faced challenges in 2026, losing 20% year-to-date and 14% in the past month as per Business Standard. However, the stock has delivered impressive long-term returns, gaining 134% in three years and 511% in five years, delivering multibagger gains. The defence sector outlook remains positive with India's defence budget surging from ₹2.53 trillion in FY14 to ₹6.81 trillion in FY26, reflecting the government's strong focus on military modernisation and national security. According to international brokerage Jefferies, more than $120 billion of acquisition proposals were cleared during fiscal 2025-26, providing visibility for medium-term order flows.
