Balrampur Bioyug, the PLA-focused arm of Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML), launched its mobile awareness campaign 'Bioyug on Wheels' in Rajkot, Gujarat, on Thursday, showcasing sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. According to the company's press release, the event was held at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Art Gallery grounds near Racecourse, Rajkot, and drew over 500 visitors including students, educators, and sustainability professionals. The initiative forms part of BCML's broader mission to promote circular economy principles and mainstream bio-based innovation, with the company encouraging conversations around bio-based innovation to make them more accessible and inspire collective action towards a cleaner, more circular future.
The awareness campaign supports BCML's upcoming Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) plant — India's first, with a planned capacity of 80,000 tonnes per annum. As reported by the company, BCML is one of India's largest integrated sugar companies with ten factories across Uttar Pradesh, an aggregate crushing capacity of 80,000 tonnes crushed per day (TCD), distillery capacity of 1,050 kilolitres per day (KLPD), and saleable power cogeneration capacity of 175.7 MW. The company is pushing to build public and industry acceptance for this sustainable manufacturing initiative, with officials from Rajkot Municipal Corporation's West Zone attending the event, including Management & Environment Engineer Pragnesh Solanki, Management Manager Dipal Kathad, and retired water disaster officer Dipak Pandit, whose presence reflected growing support from local governance and the community for plastic-free alternatives.
Through live product demonstrations and interactive exhibits, attendees were shown how compostable bioplastics derived from sugarcane can replace conventional single-use plastic items such as bottles, cutlery, cold cups, and garbage bags. According to the company's press release, citing a study by a premier government institution, PLA microplastics were found to break down safely in Indian soil conditions, with particle concentration declining from 287 to 18 particles per kilogram within 180 days, unlike conventional plastics. Executive Director Avantika Saraogi reported that the response from compounders, converters, and bottle manufacturers in Rajkot reflected growing commercial appetite for sustainable materials, with PLA bioplastics offering an effective eco-friendly alternative to banned single-use plastic items.
Speaking on the completion of the Rajkot activation, Executive Director Avantika Saraogi expressed encouragement from the response of Rajkot citizens, stating that the company was encouraged by the response from the people of Rajkot. However, as reported in the latest official exchange filing, no immediate revenue or earnings contribution has been disclosed from the PLA plant development. The commercial success depends on wider adoption of PLA bioplastics, which may be influenced by environmental regulations and government policies. Commercial production from the PLA plant is yet to commence, and market acceptance of bio-based alternatives remains an execution factor. BCML believes that if commercialization of PLA products is delayed or customer adoption remains limited, the awareness campaign may have minimal impact on its long-term PLA business.
The company's total market capitalisation stood at approximately ₹12,000 crore, with BCML operating ten sugar factories across Uttar Pradesh with a crushing capacity of 80,000 TCD and distillery operations of 1,050 KLPD. The stock's strong performance reflects investor confidence in BCML's strategic pivot towards sustainable bioplastics manufacturing, with the company's integrated sugar operations providing a solid foundation for its PLA plant development initiative. The announcement relates to a public outreach and sustainability initiative rather than a commercial order or financial transaction, with its long-term business impact depending on regulatory support, customer adoption of bioplastics, and successful commercialization of BCML's PLA business.
