Balkrishna Industries is undergoing a significant strategic transformation as it moves away from its traditional off-highway tyre business. According to reports from Mint, joint managing director Rajiv Poddar stated that the company is preparing for geopolitical scenarios by expanding into on-road segments and diversifying into carbon black production. The shift represents a departure from the company's historical reliance on international off-highway tyre exports, which has been a cornerstone of its business since the mid-1990s.
The company's international exposure has decreased substantially over recent years. As reported by Mint, export contribution in the off-highway tyre segment fell to 64% in FY26 from 71% a year earlier and 82% in FY22. This reduction reflects the company's strategic pivot toward domestic markets and diversification into new product segments. The shift comes as the tyre industry faces multiple international headwinds, including tariffs announced by the Trump administration and logistical challenges from the West Asia war.
The company's financial results have been affected by global market conditions. According to Mint, Balkrishna Industries' revenue growth slowed to 3% in the last year to ₹10,823 crore, while net profit fell 18% to ₹1,243 crore. The company's shares have declined 11% over the past year compared to a 12% gain in Nifty Auto, reflecting investor concerns about global headwinds exposure. The performance challenges come as the company navigates changing market dynamics in key international markets.
Balkrishna Industries is implementing a comprehensive diversification strategy across multiple segments. As reported by Mint, the company entered the on-highway segment earlier this year with products for two-wheelers and commercial vehicles. The company aims to more than double its revenue to ₹23,000 crore by FY2030. According to Poddar, the first phase of on-road business will focus on India, while the carbon business and off-road segments will maintain India as a strong pillar of their operations.
The company faces competition from other major players in the tyre industry. According to Mint, rival CEAT is attempting to expand into the off-highway tyre space, having acquired Canadian tyre brand Camso in 2024. However, Balkrishna Industries maintains a strong position in global markets, with analysts noting that its market share in the $20 billion global OHT segment is merely 6-7%, with potential for improvement to 8% through deeper market penetration and new product additions. The company's strategy focuses on organic growth rather than acquisitions, leveraging its in-house technology and brand investments.
