Shares of Bajaj Electricals Ltd. tumbled as much as 8% on Monday, May 18, following the company's disappointing fourth-quarter results. According to reports from CNBC TV18, the company posted a quarterly loss due to exceptional provisions amounting to ₹55.8 crore. The stock decline reflects investor concerns over the company's performance in the consumer products segment and the significant exceptional charges that impacted overall profitability.
The quarterly loss was primarily attributed to exceptional provisions of ₹55.8 crore, which included an impairment charge of ₹26.4 crore related to goodwill of Nirlep and another ₹29 crore towards moulds and dies under property, plant and equipment (PPE). As reported by CNBC TV18, employee expenses as a percentage of sales stood at 7.6% compared to 7.5% in the year-ago quarter, while other expenses rose sharply to 18.3% of sales from 16.2% last year, indicating increased operational costs during the quarter.
The consumer products segment remained under significant pressure during the quarter, with revenue declining 7% year-on-year to ₹926 crore from ₹994 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. According to CNBC TV18, the segment also slipped into a PBIT loss compared to a profit of ₹38.9 crore reported in the corresponding quarter last year, marking a substantial deterioration in profitability metrics for this key business segment.
In contrast to the consumer products segment, the lighting business delivered a robust performance during the quarter. As reported by CNBC TV18, segment revenue rose 16% year-on-year to ₹314 crore from ₹274 crore, demonstrating strong growth momentum in this business vertical. The lighting segment also showed improved operational efficiency with PBIT margins improving 90 basis points to 8.7%, indicating better cost management and operational leverage in this segment.
The quarterly results reflect a challenging period for Bajaj Electricals, with the company facing headwinds in its consumer products business while the lighting segment provided some offsetting strength. According to CNBC TV18, the exceptional charges, increased operational costs, and deterioration in consumer products profitability contributed to the overall quarterly loss, leading to the significant stock price decline as investors reacted to the disappointing performance metrics.
