The board of Asian Paints has officially approved the appointment of Leo Puri as its new chairman-designate, with the announcement made at a board meeting held on September 7, 2026. According to Reuters, Puri has been appointed as an Additional and Independent Director for a first term of five consecutive years from September 7, 2026 to September 6, 2031, subject to shareholder approval. His appointment as chairman takes effect from January 23, 2027, when he will replace R. Seshasayee whose term as Independent Director and Chairman concludes on January 22, 2027. The decision was based on the recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee, with the appointments subject to shareholder approval through a Postal Ballot process. As per The Economic Times, this leadership change is part of Asian Paints' strategic growth plan as the company confronts mounting competition in the decorative paints market.
Puri brings four decades of experience in the financial sector and industry leadership, having held senior roles at JPMorgan Chase, UTI Asset Management and private equity firm Warburg Pincus. As reported by Reuters, he currently serves as the India advisory chair at global private equity firm Apax and chairman of Fortis Healthcare. His diverse portfolio includes being the lead independent director at Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and an independent director at Spain-based travel technology company Amadeus IT Group. Previously, Puri served as Chairman for South & Southeast Asia at JP Morgan Chase, held positions as Managing Director and CEO of UTI Asset Management Company Limited, and was Managing Director and General Partner at Warburg Pincus. He also served as Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company. The company confirmed that Puri meets the independence criteria prescribed under the Companies Act, 2013 and the SEBI Listing Regulations, and is not related to any directors, key managerial personnel, or promoters of the company. Puri holds master's degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford and in Law from the University of Cambridge.
The leadership transition comes at a critical time when India's top paint maker is facing mounting competition from new entrants and well-funded conglomerates such as the Aditya Birla Group and JSW Group, which have stepped up investments in the decorative paints market. According to Reuters, this intensified competition is intensifying pressure on growth and margins for the company. As per The Economic Times, this leadership change comes at a time when the company is confronting formidable competition from well-funded new entrants aiming to capture market share in the decorative paints space, putting pressure on profit margins. Puri's extensive background in private equity and financial services may influence Asian Paints' strategic approach to capital allocation and potential M&A activities. His experience in managing complex business environments and his understanding of the competitive dynamics in the paint industry may prove valuable in addressing these challenges as the company battles rising competition and mounting pressure in the fiercely contested decorative paints market.
