Anant M. Ambani has been formally appointed whole-time executive director of Reliance Industries Ltd. with 94.4% shareholder approval, effective May 1, 2025. The appointment has secured overwhelming backing from shareholders for the conglomerate's youngest director. As reported by multiple sources, this move strengthens leadership at India's largest conglomerate as it advances its retail, energy transition, and digital ambitions. Anant Ambani has been serving as a whole-time executive director since May 1, 2025, for a five-year term.
Prior to his current role, Anant Ambani served as a non-executive director on Reliance's board and has been part of the boards of several Reliance group companies including Jio Platforms, Reliance Retail Ventures, Reliance New Energy, and Reliance New Solar Energy. According to Mint, he has also been a board member of Reliance Foundation since September 2022. His most notable initiative is Vantara, a massive 3,000-acre wildlife preservation and rehabilitation project located within the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery Complex in Gujarat, India. Anant Ambani already plays a key role in expanding Reliance's green energy and consumer businesses.
The appointment faced mixed recommendations from international proxy advisory firms in 2023. As reported by Bloomberg News, Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. (ISS) recommended shareholders vote against his board appointment, citing concerns over his limited leadership experience of around six years. However, Glass Lewis favoured Anant's appointment, noting that the other two directors up for election were just three years older with similar professional experiences. According to Mint, ISS had backed the appointments of his siblings Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani.
Akash Ambani currently serves as chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom and digital services arm, while Isha Ambani is an executive director at Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd, the group's retail arm. According to Mint, Anant Ambani is known for his work in animal welfare, having been named the youngest and first Asian recipient of the Global Humanitarian Award 2025 by the Global Humane Society. He is a Brown University graduate and serves as the youngest whole-time director at Reliance Industries. Separately, he was honoured as the youngest and first Asian recipient of the Global Humanitarian Award 2025 for his philanthropic contributions.
