Air India and SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to explore deeper collaboration in maintenance, repair and overhaul services in India. The latest agreement builds on existing agreements covering component support for Air India's Airbus A320 fleet and strategic partnership in developing base maintenance facilities in Bangalore. While no definitive agreements have yet been reached, the framework signals a push toward strengthening India's aviation infrastructure and could enhance SIA Engineering's positioning in a high-growth market, subject to future developments. The move represents a significant escalation from earlier non-binding MoUs, with both companies now committed to exploring deeper cooperation in the MRO sector.
The collaboration aims to support India's ambition of becoming a global aviation MRO hub through leveraging SIA Engineering's technical expertise and Air India's operational scale. The companies are exploring options including a possible joint venture serving India's expanding fleet and regional demand. The latest agreement aims to strengthen cooperation by combining SIAEC's technical expertise with Air India's expanding operations to support the development of MRO capabilities in India. This collaboration represents a significant step toward establishing India as a major player in the global aviation maintenance sector, with the framework signals a push toward strengthening India's aviation infrastructure and could enhance SIA Engineering's positioning in the high-growth Indian market.
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, stating: "India's rapid aviation growth is driving the need for a stronger, more self-reliant MRO ecosystem within the country. As fleet sizes expand and operations scale up, developing local maintenance capacity will be important to support efficiency, resilience and long-term growth. Partnerships such as this can play a constructive role in enabling that broader direction and developing India as a global aviation hub." Chin Yau Seng, Chief Executive Officer SIAEC, highlighted India's position in the global aviation market, noting: "India is one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, and the continued development of its MRO capabilities will be an important step in strengthening its position within the global aerospace ecosystem. Through this MOU, we look forward to exploring how SIAEC's technical expertise can support the progressive build-up of capabilities and capacity in India, alongside our ongoing partnership with Air India."
The two companies already maintain a strong operational partnership, with Air India and SIAEC working together on maintenance and component support for the airline's expanding fleet and network. In February 2024, Air India signed a 12-year Inventory Technical Management (ITM) agreement with SIAEC to provide component support for its Airbus A320 family fleet. Additionally, in May 2024, the two companies signed a 12-year Inventory Technical Management (ITM) agreement for extensive component support coverage for Air India's Airbus A320 family fleet. In May 2024, Air India roped in SIAEC as the base maintenance strategic partner for the development of the airline's base maintenance facilities in Bengaluru. The existing collaboration provides a solid foundation for the expanded MRO partnership initiative, with the agreement builds on the existing relationship between the two companies and demonstrates the deepening strategic alliance between the entities.
The latest MRO collaboration builds upon broader strategic partnerships between the airlines. In January this year, Air India signed a commercial cooperation framework agreement with Singapore Airlines, under which the carriers will explore ways to improve connectivity between Singapore and India, among other efforts. The Tata Group acquired loss-making Air India from the government in January 2022, and later, Singapore Airlines Group acquired a stake in the airline. This partnership framework positions both airlines to leverage their combined strengths in the rapidly growing Indian aviation market, with Air India benefiting from SIAEC's technical expertise while Singapore Airlines gains access to India's expanding aviation sector through its stake in Air India. India is one of the world's fastest-growing domestic aviation markets, making the MRO hub development particularly strategic for both companies.
