Air India has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the world's fourth most punctual airline in June 2026, according to Cirium's latest On-Time Performance (OTP) rankings. The Tata Group-owned airline recorded an on-time arrival rate of 86.85% across 15,135 flights during the month, demonstrating substantial improvements in schedule reliability. This performance earned Air India a place among the global top five carriers in Cirium's June 2026 OTP rankings, a key industry benchmark that measures airline punctuality based on scheduled and actual arrival times. The airline also achieved an on-time departure rate of 86.23% and a completion factor of 99.7%, indicating that virtually all flights scheduled during the month were operated without cancellation. As per mid-day, Air India secured the fourth position in Cirium's June 2026 On-Time Performance Report, making it the only Indian airline to feature in the global top five. The airline was followed by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) at 88.32%, Avianca at 87.98%, Hainan Airlines at 87.87%, and Spain's Iberia at 86.74% in the global top 10.
Air India's operational gains reflect sustained efforts to improve reliability through better network planning, enhanced monitoring and faster decision-making across its domestic and international operations. The airline operates a hub-and-spoke network through congested airports at Delhi and Mumbai, where schedule adherence is often affected by air traffic control restrictions and airport congestion, which can have a ripple effect across the network. To address these challenges, Air India has introduced measures such as reducing aircraft turnaround time, strengthening real-time operational monitoring and improving departure punctuality. The airline has also enhanced contingency planning and coordination across teams to minimise disruptions caused by adverse weather, airspace restrictions, technical issues and airport congestion. An airline official stated that the ranking reflected these sustained operational improvements, demonstrating the airline's commitment to delivering reliable service despite challenging operational conditions.
Air India has significantly expanded its widebody fleet capabilities with three Boeing 787-9 aircraft inducted over the past six months, with more Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A350-1000s due later this year. The airline has also inducted two of its legacy Boeing 787-8 aircraft with refurbished interiors back into service, while three more are currently undergoing upgrades in the United States. By the end of 2026, more than 50% of Air India's widebody fleet is expected to feature new or upgraded interiors, representing a major transformation in the airline's operational capabilities. As part of its broader transformation plan, the airline has placed orders for 600 Airbus and Boeing aircraft as part of its fleet renewal programme. The operational improvements come alongside this wider transformation plan, which includes fleet renewal, customer experience improvements, digital initiatives and expansion of its global network.
Air India's performance placed it behind Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) at 88.32%, Avianca at 87.98%, Hainan Airlines at 87.87%, and Spain's Iberia at 86.74% in the global rankings, with Singapore Airlines (86.74%) rounding up the top five. In the Asia-Pacific rankings, Air India also placed fourth, behind Jeju Air, Korean Air and Scoot, while finishing ahead of Singapore Airlines and IndiGo. According to Cirium's monthly global On-Time Performance report, these rankings track airline punctuality and completion rates across the aviation industry. The airline attributed its improvement to investments in operational resilience, improved network planning, and enhanced execution across its domestic and international operations. Describing the challenges of operating one of the country's largest hub-and-spoke networks, Air India said its operations are often affected by congestion and air traffic control restrictions at Delhi and Mumbai airports, which can have a cascading impact across the network.
