According to reports from Business Standard, Agoda is implementing a comprehensive expansion strategy in India to capitalize on resilient travel demand. The online travel company is expanding accommodation supply, localisation and fintech offerings in the Indian market as domestic and outbound tourism continues to show strength. This strategic move comes as the company recognizes India's market resilience in the face of global travel disruptions, with India's travel sector resilience making it one of the company's fastest-growing markets globally. As per Agoda, the Singapore-headquartered travel aggregator is adding more accommodation supply in India annually than in any other market, demonstrating the country's significant importance to their global expansion plans.
As reported by Business Standard, Gaurav Malik, country director for Indian subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, highlighted the resilient nature of Indian travel demand. Despite ongoing tensions in West Asia that have disrupted some travel routes, Indians are increasingly pivoting towards domestic tourism and intra-Asian destinations such as Malaysia, Japan and Vietnam. According to Malik, "Some destinations may become less accessible, but the demand does not disappear. It shifts." This trend is supported by Agoda's latest data showing strong travel momentum among Indian travellers during the first quarter of 2026 across domestic, outbound and inbound segments. The company attributes this surge to favourable visa policies, improving air connectivity, and their strong regional network across Asia.
According to Business Standard, the company's expansion strategy reflects its understanding of how travel patterns are evolving in the current geopolitical environment. Agoda is positioning itself to serve the changing preferences of Indian travelers, who are adapting to new travel restrictions by focusing on domestic and regional destinations within Asia. This approach allows the company to maintain its market presence while adapting to global travel disruptions. As per Agoda, the company is focusing heavily on expanding hotel and non-hotel accommodation listings, especially in smaller cities and emerging destinations where travel demand is picking up, with the Northeast emerging as a strong growth market.
According to Agoda's latest data, Vietnam recorded over 150% year-on-year growth in searches during the January-March quarter, while Malaysia saw over 60% growth and Indonesia more than 50% growth, aided by sustained demand for destinations such as Bali. Thailand and Japan also posted over 30% growth in searches. For India specifically, Agoda is seeing rapid growth in demand for secondary and emerging destinations rather than just metro cities and established tourism hubs. Destinations such as Gangtok, Guwahati and Cherrapunji grew over 50% on an annual basis during the first quarter of 2026, while Puducherry and Ooty also saw over 60% growth in searches. Malik noted that value-conscious Indian consumers continue to prioritise affordability without compromising on experiences.
According to Business Standard, Agoda is investing in localisation and fintech offerings, including payment partnerships with banks and financial institutions, local-language discovery tools, and AI-powered price discovery features aimed at helping travellers compare and find better deals. The company is strengthening its 'connected trip' or multi-product booking strategy, which allows travellers to book flights, accommodation and activities together through a single interface that renews automatically and cancels anytime. This technological approach supports their strategy to make India, both as a destination and as an origin, a bigger part of their global business while delivering value that leads to more bookings and ultimately more revenue for the platform.
