Chennai-based Afcom Holdings has officially signed a deal with Boeing for the acquisition of up to four Boeing 777-8F twinjet freighters. The agreement was executed on September 2, 2026, and has been disclosed by the company under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015. As per Moneycontrol, the provisional agreement provides few additional details but would mark a potential expansion of Afcom's long-haul cargo fleet and add another prospective customer to Boeing's new freighter program. The LOI is a preliminary agreement between an airline and an aircraft manufacturer to negotiate a future firm aircraft order, filed with BSE on September 2, 2026. If finalised, this would mark the first order for the Boeing 777-8F by an Indian carrier, according to the company. The agreement is subject to the finalisation of definitive documentation between the two parties, with Afcom stating it will make further disclosures if there is any material development.
The Boeing 777 wide-body freighters offer approximately five times the capacity of Afcom's existing B737 800 freighters. These aircraft are specifically designed for long-haul sectors requiring 10-12+ hours of flying, positioning Afcom to serve routes that demand extended flight duration capabilities. The acquisition marks Afcom's first move into widebody aircraft, extending a fleet that has so far been built entirely around narrowbody freighters. The new wide-body freighters will be based in Chennai, serving critical long-haul sectors including routes to the Far East and Africa. According to Moneycontrol, the Boeing 777-8F freighters are scheduled to enter service in 2028, with the proposed fleet expansion coming as Afcom scales up its air freight business. The addition of this capacity will give the company greater flexibility to participate in international cargo flow and respond to changing demand across key trade corridors.
Afcom Holdings has demonstrated strong financial performance to support its fleet expansion strategy. The company reported strong growth in FY26, with revenue from operations rising to ₹583.1 crore, from ₹238.7 crore in FY25. Net profit increased to ₹121.9 crore from ₹36.9 crore during the same period. On May 5, 2026, the company completed a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), securing ₹199.85 crore to finance its fleet upgrade. The company had outlined plans to deploy capital raised through equity issues and the QIP towards the aircraft acquisition and related costs, including lease deposits, insurance, customs duty, equipment and crew training. The transition to wide-body freighters is expected to enhance margins significantly, contingent upon achieving optimal load factors and efficient route management.
Afcom Cargo is a Chennai-based air cargo carrier that has built its business around a fleet of three Boeing 737-800 freighters, operating a mix of scheduled and ad hoc charter services. Its international network currently covers the Middle East, the Maldives and parts of Southeast Asia, with Dubai as its main overseas gateway. The carrier operates three weekly 737 freighter flights from Navi Mumbai International Airport to Dubai World Central, a route it moved from Mumbai in August. In June, it operated the first cargo flight out of Noida International Airport, carrying around 20 tonnes of mixed cargo on the Chennai–Noida–Chennai sector. Afcom transports a range of shipments including general cargo, perishables, pharma, project cargo, dangerous goods and high-value cargo, with services extending across various ASEAN and Middle-Eastern countries.
According to The STAT Trade Times, at the ACFI World Conclave 2026 in Delhi, Afcom President Kochat Narendran revealed that Southeast Asia, including Singapore, was the carrier's next area of focus, subject to regulatory approval. Key opportunities the company is monitoring include Vietnam's electronics trade and Bangkok-bound perishables. The expansion plans include increasing the freighter fleet from three to five aircraft, with the 777-8F deal representing a significant step towards this growth strategy. Deepak Parasuraman, Chairman & Managing Director of Afcom, described the proposed acquisition as an important step in AFCOM's growth journey, giving the company greater scale and flexibility to pursue larger cargo opportunities and serve evolving customer requirements across markets. Market response has been largely positive, with investors recognizing the strategic value of enhanced long-haul capabilities, though competition is expected to intensify as rival cargo airlines pursue similar fleet upgrades.
