
Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has achieved a historic milestone by commissioning the world's largest single-location battery storage deployment outside China - a cumulative 3.37 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat. According to UNI, this deployment includes the 1.37 GWh capacity commissioned in March 2026, taking the company's total operational BESS capacity at Khavda to 3.37 GWh. The project was delivered within just 10 months of commencement of on-site construction, marking one of the fastest utility-scale battery storage deployments globally. As reported by UNI, the commissioning represents a major step towards strengthening grid reliability, supporting peak-hour electricity supply and enabling renewable energy to provide dependable power at scale.
The commissioning represents a significant expansion of Adani Green Energy's renewable energy infrastructure capabilities. As reported by UNI, the company now has total operational renewable generation capacity of 19,785.8 MW and total operational BESS capacity of 3,366 MWh. The 3.37 GWh BESS can store enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes for an entire day, supporting peak electricity demand of cities like Indore, Chandigarh or the entire state of Goa. This capacity can also power more than 12 million LED bulbs continuously for ten hours, demonstrating the project's substantial impact on grid stability and renewable energy reliability. According to UNI, the storage capacity can support peak electricity demand of cities such as Indore and Chandigarh, or even the entire state of Goa, while the BESS project uses advanced energy management systems and lithium-ion battery technologies to improve efficiency, reliability, and grid responsiveness.
Adani Green Energy has outlined ambitious expansion plans for its battery storage portfolio. According to UNI, the company plans to add over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in FY27 and scale this to 50 GWh over the next five years as part of its clean energy expansion strategy. This expansion strategy positions AGEL as a major player in India's energy storage market, supporting the country's transition to renewable energy and grid modernization initiatives. Speaking on the development, Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, stated that "large-scale energy storage will play a defining role in the next phase of India's clean energy transition. As renewable energy capacity scales rapidly, storage infrastructure becomes critical for delivering reliable, round-the-clock clean power." He added that with the commissioning of the 3.37 GWh BESS at Khavda, AGEL is strengthening the foundation for resilient, dispatchable and flexible energy systems, with investments reflecting a long-term commitment to building future-ready clean energy infrastructure at global scale.
