A comprehensive survey of 1,161 employees and job seekers across India has revealed the extent of trust crisis in the hiring market. According to the report by jobs platform Indeed, 93% of respondents have encountered suspicious or fraudulent job openings, while 51% said they are not confident in distinguishing between genuine recruiters and scammers. The survey found that 75% of job seekers are now ignoring employment opportunities over fears they could be fraudulent, suggesting recruitment scams are beginning to hurt legitimate hiring even when no money is lost.
While only 3% of all respondents reported losing money to recruitment scams, the emotional and professional impact has been significant. As reported by Indeed, 31% of respondents said their experience with recruitment scams had reduced their trust in recruiters and employers. Additionally, 19% reported stress or anxiety during their job search, while 14% said excessive caution after encountering scams had caused them to miss genuine employment opportunities. The survey identified early-career workers as the most vulnerable group, with 52% of Gen Z respondents saying fake job opportunities had caused them to miss genuine opportunities.
The impact has been particularly severe among younger job seekers, with 46% of Gen Z respondents reporting losing money to recruitment scams, sharply higher than the 3% recorded across the overall sample. According to the survey, 52% of Gen Z respondents said fake job opportunities had caused them to miss genuine opportunities, while 51% reported emotional stress. The wide gap points to a significantly greater reported financial impact among younger job seekers, though the release does not provide the size of the Gen Z sample or specific amounts lost.
The erosion of trust is changing candidate behavior, with 50% of surveyed candidates saying the ability to verify a recruiter's identity is the strongest indicator that an opportunity is genuine. As reported by Indeed, 47% of respondents said they trusted communication sent from an official company email address. "Candidates today are taking extra steps to verify every opportunity they come across, and that's changing the way hiring works," said Rohan Sylvester, talent strategy advisor at Indeed. The survey covered respondents from different age groups, career stages, and locations including Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 cities and rural areas across India.
