Indian jewellery buyers are transforming from impulse shoppers into market watchers, with digital browsing activity significantly outpacing actual purchases. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, consumers are now browsing 10 to 30 times more than they are buying, tracking gold prices and comparing designs across platforms before making decisions. Gaurav Singh Kushwaha, Founder and CEO of Bluestone, noted that this behavioural change is particularly pronounced among women, who are spending more time researching before committing to purchases.
The primary driver behind this shift is gold price volatility, with prices remaining elevated and fluctuating in the short term. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, consumers are choosing to delay purchases or wait for corrections when prices move sharply. Suvankar Sen, MD and CEO of Senco Gold and Diamonds, explained that while consumers remain emotionally attached to gold, they prefer to wait or buy closer to occasions when prices stabilize.
This behavioural shift has extended the purchase cycle and created a more research-driven approach to jewellery buying. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, conversion rates, especially online, have slowed despite healthy footfalls and digital traffic. Consumers are increasingly blending channels, discovering and researching online but completing purchases in-store where trust and tactile experience still matter. The trend is also visible in weddings and festive occasions, traditionally strong triggers, where buyers are delaying decisions until closer to the event.
Industry executives view this surge in browsing as a positive indicator rather than a negative trend. Arun Narayan, CEO of Tanishq, told The Hindu BusinessLine that online platforms are becoming critical for consumer immersion rather than immediate transactions, with traffic to their website growing strongly. However, the nature of purchases is changing, with a visible shift towards lighter, lower-ticket jewellery such as 9K and 14K daily wear, coins, and smaller investments. For jewellers, the challenge lies in converting well-researched browsers into buyers, often at the very last moment.
