The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai Zonal Unit, has successfully dismantled an international gold-smuggling operation involving Chinese nationals and Indian accomplices. According to reports from ANI News, the agency intercepted a commercial consignment at Mumbai's Air Cargo Complex, leading to the seizure of significant quantities of contraband gold.
The DRI seized 691.87 grams of 24-carat gold valued at approximately ₹1.10 crore during the operation. As reported by ANI News, the gold was strategically concealed inside the motor of a treadmill that was imported from Hong Kong. This method of concealment demonstrates the sophistication of the smuggling operation and the lengths to which criminals will go to avoid detection.
The syndicate allegedly operated through a collaboration between Chinese nationals and Indian accomplices, according to DRI officials. The operation involved the importation of goods from Hong Kong, suggesting an organized network spanning multiple jurisdictions. The seizure represents a significant disruption to international gold smuggling operations targeting India's market.
